Chapter 34: The Guardian Beneath the Waves

908 Words
Morning arrived cold and grey over Stone Valley. The wind howled between the towering cliffs as Alina and her small group prepared to continue their journey. The brief clash with Magnus’ scouts during the night had reminded them that the war was already spreading across the land. Rylan tightened the straps on his saddle and scanned the rocky paths ahead. “We should reach the eastern sea before nightfall,” he said. Alina nodded, though her thoughts were far away. Since leaving the kingdom, the Moon-Bound power within her had grown stronger with every mile they traveled east. It pulsed beneath her skin like a quiet heartbeat. Lunaris walked beside her horse, silent but watchful. You can feel it, can’t you? the guardian’s voice echoed gently in her mind. Alina placed a hand over her chest. “Yes.” Her eyes lifted toward the horizon beyond the valley. “It’s calling to me.” They rode through the narrow stone paths for several hours before the cliffs slowly opened into a vast stretch of land. And beyond it— The sea. Alina pulled her horse to a stop as the endless blue waters appeared before them. The eastern sea stretched across the horizon like a giant mirror reflecting the cloudy sky above. Waves rolled calmly against the rocky shoreline. For a moment, the entire group stood in silence. Rylan finally spoke. “So the legends were true.” Alina dismounted slowly, her silver eyes fixed on the water. The Moon-Bound power inside her was stronger than ever now. Almost overwhelming. Lunaris stepped closer to the shore. The second guardian sleeps beneath these waters. Alina walked toward the edge of the ocean. The cool wind brushed against her face as she stared into the depths below. “How do I wake it?” she asked. Lunaris’ glowing eyes softened slightly. Call to it. Alina frowned. “With words?” No. With your heart. Alina took a deep breath. She stepped into the shallow water. The cold waves washed gently around her feet. Closing her eyes, she focused on the power flowing inside her. The energy of the Moon-Bound began to rise. Slowly at first. Then stronger. Silver light began glowing around her hands. Rylan and the warriors watched nervously from the shore. The ocean remained calm. For several long seconds… Nothing happened. Then suddenly— The sea began to tremble. Small ripples spread across the surface of the water. Rylan stepped back. “Something’s moving.” The ripples quickly grew into waves. Then the waves turned violent. The ocean began to churn as if something enormous was stirring beneath it. Alina’s eyes opened. She could feel it now. Something ancient was rising from the depths. The sea exploded upward. A massive shape burst from the water with a roar that shook the sky. A colossal serpent-like creature emerged from the waves. Its body was covered in deep blue scales that shimmered like gemstones under the cloudy sunlight. Its glowing aqua eyes locked onto Alina. The creature’s enormous form towered above the ocean. Rylan stared in disbelief. “That… is the second guardian?” Lunaris stepped forward calmly. Yes. The creature lowered its massive head toward the shore. Water cascaded down its scales like rain. Alina’s heart pounded as she looked into the guardian’s glowing eyes. “Who are you?” she whispered. The creature’s voice echoed through her mind like a deep current flowing through the ocean. I am Thalor, Guardian of the Eastern Sea. Alina felt the Moon-Bound energy inside her resonate with the guardian’s presence. “You felt my call?” Thalor nodded slowly. The Moon-Bound has awakened again. His eyes turned briefly toward Lunaris. Then the balance may still be restored. Rylan exhaled in relief. “So we found him.” But before anyone could relax— The sky darkened suddenly. A massive shadow swept across the ocean. Lunaris’ ears twitched sharply. Alina looked up. Her heart dropped. Dravoryx. The Devourer descended from the clouds with terrifying speed. His massive wings cut through the stormy sky as he landed heavily on the rocky cliffs above the shore. The ground trembled under his weight. Golden eyes glowed with amusement. “Well…” His deep voice echoed across the crashing waves. “This is a wonderful surprise.” Dravoryx’s gaze moved between Lunaris and Thalor. “Two guardians already awakened.” Alina stepped forward into the shallow water. “You’re not stopping us.” Dravoryx tilted his head slightly. Oh, I don’t plan to. His monstrous grin slowly appeared. I came to test something. His wings stretched wide. I want to see how strong the Moon-Bound has become. Without warning, Dravoryx unleashed a massive blast of dark fire toward the ocean. The flames crashed against the waves, creating a violent explosion of steam and energy. Thalor roared and surged forward, his enormous body rising from the water to shield Alina. Lunaris leaped across the shore and attacked from the side, his silver aura glowing brightly. For the first time— Two guardians faced the Devourer together. Dravoryx laughed with excitement as the battle erupted along the coast. Yes! His voice boomed across the sea. This is the war I’ve been waiting for! Alina stood between the crashing waves and the blazing sky. The power of the Moon-Bound surged through her veins. And for the first time… She realized the fate of the kingdom might truly depend on her.
