Chapter 10: The Wolf And the Girl

525 Words
Alina’s hand remained against the wolf’s fur. Soft. Warm. Real. The giant black wolf stood perfectly still beneath her touch. His golden eyes never left hers. Then suddenly— The mark on her neck flared. Pain shot through her body. Alina gasped and stumbled back. The wolf growled instantly. A low, dangerous sound. Then bones cracked. The massive wolf shifted back into Kael. He stepped toward her immediately. “What happened?” Alina pressed a hand to her neck. “It burned.” Kael’s expression darkened. “The bond.” Before he could say more, footsteps echoed down the corridor. A guard appeared. “Your Majesty, the rebels are retreating.” Kael looked toward the broken window at the end of the hall. “They have what they came for,” he said. Alina frowned. “What do you mean?” His gaze returned to her. “They tested the palace.” A chill ran down her spine. “And now they know where I am.” Kael said nothing. Which was answer enough. The guard hesitated. “There is something else.” Kael turned sharply. “Speak.” “The prisoner from earlier is dead.” Silence. “How?” Kael asked. The guard swallowed. “He killed himself before we could question him.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “He left a message.” Alina’s heart skipped. “What message?” The guard looked at her. “He said the northern Alpha is coming himself.” Fear settled heavily in the corridor. Magnus. The rebel leader. The man who wanted her dead. Kael’s eyes darkened. “Prepare the palace,” he ordered. “Double the guards. No one enters or leaves without my permission.” The guard bowed and hurried away. Alina looked at Kael. “Who is Magnus?” For a moment, Kael said nothing. Then he answered. “The only man in this kingdom dangerous enough to challenge me.” Her breath caught. “And he wants me?” “He wants what you are.” Alina frowned. “I’m nothing.” “No,” Kael said quietly. “You are the human who carries my mark.” His gaze moved to her neck. “And that makes you the most valuable person in the kingdom.” Alina’s heart pounded. Because the way he said it— It didn’t sound like protection. It sounded like possession. She stepped back. “I’m not yours.” Kael looked at her for a long moment. Then he moved closer. Too close. “You already are.” Before she could answer— The mark on her neck burned again. Hotter this time. Brighter. Alina gasped. Then suddenly— A strange image flashed through her mind. A forest. Blood. Golden eyes glowing in the dark. And a voice. Low. Cold. “She belongs to me now.” The vision vanished. Alina nearly lost her balance. Kael caught her before she could fall. “What did you see?” he asked. She looked up at him, breathing hard. “I think…” Fear rose in her chest. “I think someone else is connected to the bond.”
