Chapter13

Mary was so infuriated by Emily's words that her face twisted in anger. Seeing Mary’s increasingly sharp gaze, Lily quickly grabbed Emily's arm and forcibly dragged her away. She was really impressed by her sister Emily's sharp tongue, capable of enraging others without a second thought. As soon as Emily left, the meeting room emptied quickly. Mary's face remained grim, and no one dared to cross her path, except for her intern, Zoe, who bravely approached to flatter her. "Mary, you’re amazing! You even know Rachel! I heard from a friend at DH Entertainment that Rachel is treated very well by the company. Even the company's top star, Mary, has to give her some leeway. She gets to pick the best scripts first, almost like she's DH's own daughter." The implication of "daughter" was not lost on Mary. She recalled a conversation with Rachel a few days ago when Rachel had accidentally called someone "Dad." Although she quickly corrected herself, Mary was sure she hadn't misheard. When Rachel mentioned the chairman of DH Group, she had referred to him as "Dad." Everyone knew that DH Group's Chairman, Mr. Ryan, had only one daughter. Although she had never appeared in public and remained low-key and mysterious, the media had widely reported on the birth of DH Group’s daughter years ago. Mary had privately investigated and discovered that Rachel was born in the same year as the chairman’s daughter. Furthermore, at the fashion charity gala, Rachel's husband, Frank, had unexpectedly appeared, and Mary had seen Rachel exchange a few words with him. Although she couldn't hear what was said, the clues all pointed to one conclusion: Rachel was the only daughter of Mr. Ryan, the heir to DH Group. With the group's princess secretly working in the entertainment industry, getting a magazine cover was as easy as snapping her fingers. Competing with her for the new magazine could offend Rachel, and even if Susan protected Emily, she might still be forced out. Thinking about this, Mary felt much better. She could almost see Emily being kicked out of Beauty Magazine. She smirked coldly, "So what if she's talented? The fashion world isn't that easy to navigate. That clueless rookie will eventually stumble and never recover." Her words were chilling, and Zoe was startled into silence. Workplace competition was common, but even with resource conflicts, there was no need to curse someone like that. "Find out Rachel's hobbies. I need to visit the agency this afternoon." Mary wasn't very familiar with Rachel yet. Although Rachel had previously shown interest in collaborating with her, Mary still felt uneasy and wanted to confirm everything in person. She also planned to mention how Emily had compared her to Mary. In the office, Lily sat across from Emily, practically pulling her hair out in frustration. "Emily, why did you have to provoke Mary? She already said she was going to invite Rachel." Emily's eyes were fixed on her computer screen, her right index finger clicking the mouse non-stop, ignoring her. Lily leaned in close and whispered in Emily's ear, "Rachel, Emily. Her resources are top-notch, and the agency is fully supporting her. And do you know who’s backing her?" Her breath tickled Emily’s ear, causing her to shift her chair slightly. Emily responded nonchalantly, "Who?" "DH Group and SY Group." Emily finally looked up. Lily glanced around to ensure no one was nearby and continued, "I heard Rachel might be the princess of DH Group." Emily replied calmly, "Who did you hear that from?" "A lot of people are saying it." "Rumors stop at wise people." "But she and Mr. Ryan have the same surname, and she's an artist at DH." Emily rested her chin on her hand. "So, anyone with the surname Ryan who works at DH is Mr. Ryan's daughter? Well, my surname is Ryan, and I work for DH. Does that make me his daughter too?" Lily: "..." She was speechless. "Emily, I have a secret to tell you, but you can’t tell anyone. A friend of mine knows someone who works as Rachel’s assistant. Once, Rachel asked her assistant to take her back to her parents’ house, which is in the East City rich district. The houses there cost a billion yuan each and are the most expensive in the city. Only the wealthiest of the wealthy live there. And according to the assistant, Rachel’s lifestyle is very refined, the kind you'd expect from someone raised in luxury." At this point, Lily paused, noticing that Emily seemed uninterested. She shook Emily’s arm, "Emily, maybe we should just drop the idea of the year-end special. Leading the team to create a new magazine might not be a good thing. Chief Editor Xu has held that position for many years and will eventually move up. When that happens, someone will need to take over Beauty Magazine. It’s a fifteen-year-old publication, and instead of fighting for a new magazine that hasn’t even started, why not wait for the chief editor position to open up? There’s no need to clash with Mary and offend powerful people." Lily looked at Emily anxiously, deeply concerned. Emily couldn’t help but laugh and beckoned her over. "Let me tell you a secret, but you can’t tell anyone." Lily leaned in, curious, "What is it?" Emily said, "Actually, I am the heir of DH Group, so don’t worry. We won’t offend anyone important because of this." Lily: "..." I don't believe you. Lily: "Emily, can we not joke about this? This isn’t something to take lightly. If we offend the Ryan family, it won’t just be DH. We might not be able to survive in the entire city. I might not care much, since I’m just a half-baked professional who can sell bubble tea at the store downstairs if I lose this job. But you’re different. You’re talented and made for this industry. In a few years, your achievements will surely surpass Chief Editor Xu. If you’re blacklisted before you even get started, it would be such a waste." Emily chuckled, "Selling bubble tea sounds nice. I’ve always wanted to open a bubble tea shop . We could do it together." Lily’s face darkened, and she said each word slowly, "Emily, I’m being serious here." "Alright," Emily's smile faded slightly. "Let’s not speculate on things that aren’t certain. Just treat the year-end special as a normal task. The chief editor gave us this job, so let’s focus on doing our best." Lily sighed. After working as Emily's intern for several months, she knew that while Emily usually spoke softly and had a friendly demeanor, she was incredibly determined. Once she made up her mind, she wouldn’t back down easily.
