"So you really don’t have Robin’s contact information?"
Summer held Emily's phone, and after searching through her contacts and failing to find Robin, she looked up at Emily with a face full of reproach.
Emily nodded, feeling a bit embarrassed about the situation. She and Frank had entered into a business marriage, having only met once before the marriage was confirmed. It was as if they were both afraid the other would back out if they didn’t lock it in quickly. The wedding date was set hastily, and as per Emily's wishes, the ceremony wasn’t a grand affair.
She had suggested a simple family dinner after signing the marriage certificate, thinking that would be enough. At the time, Summer had been filming a movie, so Emily didn’t even invite her to be a bridesmaid. Unexpectedly, just before the wedding, Frank added her to a group chat named "True Love Support Squad," where she found out that Frank had invited some of his friends to be groomsmen.
Most of Frank’s friends were industry big shots, names that Emily was familiar with, though she hadn’t personally interacted with any of them. These big shots were addressing her as “sister-in-law” or “little sister-in-law” with great enthusiasm, which made Emily, a young woman in her prime, blush furiously.
Someone in the group had even taken the lead, saying that if she ever had any problems, she could reach out to any of them, and they’d deal with whoever dared to give her trouble.
These well-dressed elites talked like gangsters in private. If she hadn’t known who they were, Emily might have thought she had stumbled into a den of outlaws.
Later, she received several friend requests on her phone. Thinking that she and Frank would eventually divorce, she decided it wasn’t necessary to get too involved with his circle of friends. Emily had promised Frank to keep up the appearance of a loving couple in public, but the more she got to know his friends, the more situations would arise where she’d need to play the role of a devoted wife. It was better not to have too much contact with them.
On the day of the wedding, she was so nervous that her mind was a complete mess. She hesitated and then pretended not to see those friend requests.
She had thought there wouldn’t be any further interactions, but now she actually needed help from one of those people. She wondered if Robin would hold a grudge.
After hearing Emily's reason for declining Robin’s friend request, Summer was so angry she almost flipped the table. "That’s Robin we’re talking about! Robin! He’s been the most popular male artist for years, ever since he rose to fame. Do you know how many women are lining up just to sleep with him? And you actually refused to add him on w******p?"
Summer looked like a crazed fan at this moment, which made Emily laugh. "Calm down. Why are you so excited? Remember, you’re a celebrity too." Thankfully, they were in a private room. If someone had captured Summer’s hysterical expression and posted it online, she’d hit the trending topics even if she was only a minor star.
Summer took a deep breath and said sorrowfully, "How do you expect me to stay calm? He’s my idol! I’ve liked him for so many years."
Emily raised an eyebrow, surprised. "How come you’ve never mentioned it?"
They usually shared everything with each other. Summer would pull Emily along just to gawk at a good-looking guy on the street, and she frequently talked about the male celebrities she liked, switching from one crush to another, from young idols to veteran actors. But she had never once mentioned Robin.
Summer took a sip of her lemon juice, looking sad as she said, "You don’t understand. When you truly care about someone, you don’t talk about them casually."
Emily was speechless. "Alright, so do you think it’s appropriate for me to send a friend request to Robin now?"
Summer’s eyes lit up. "So, you still have his w******p?"
At this point, Emily believed that Summer had indeed liked Robin for many years. This lively, intelligent girl seemed to lose all her wits when it came to Robin.
Emily took back her phone, found the group chat "True Love Support Squad" that hadn’t been active in months, and immediately spotted Robin’s name. She tapped on his profile picture and showed it to Summer. "I already told you, we’re in the same group chat." She could easily add him as a friend from the group.
Summer quickly leaned in to look at Robin’s WeChat profile picture, which was a strawberry.
Emily stared at the blue "Add to Contacts" button on the screen and hesitated. "Do you think I should add him now?"
Summer had calmed down by this point. "Of course! Didn’t you say you wanted to invite him to do the magazine shoot?"
Emily rested her chin on her hand. "But I don’t even know which country he’s in right now. What if it’s the middle of the night there and he’s asleep? He might wake up, see my request, and just ignore it."
Summer picked up a piece of beef and put it in her bowl, betraying her friend in favor of her idol. "Well, that would be your own fault for rejecting his friend request before. Did you think it would be easy to invite him to a magazine shoot? He’s a superstar! Do you even know what that means? Your year-end special might be a big deal to other celebrities, but to him, it’s probably insignificant."
Emily rolled her eyes at her. "Can you stop being so negative and help me think of a solution?"
Summer said coolly, "Isn’t it obvious? He’s your husband’s friend, right? You could just ask your husband for help. He was the best man at your wedding; getting him to do a magazine cover should be easy as pie."
Emily thought about Frank’s frosty expression, one cold enough to freeze a person to death, and shook her head. "We agreed not to interfere in each other’s affairs, plus we’re currently giving each other the cold shoulder."
"You had a fight?"
"No, but talking to him is exhausting. He gets mad over the strangest things, and I never know what sets him off. I’d rather just avoid him."
Summer said, "Then just add Robin on w******p and see what happens. After all, you’re his brother’s wife; he shouldn’t be that petty."
With that, Summer took Emily’s phone and sent a friend request to Robin on her behalf.
The message with the request read:
"Frank’s wife."
