Lily noticed Emily looking over and assumed she was unaware of Frank Foster's identity. Excitedly, she explained, “Emily, you know about the merger between DH Group and SY Group, right??? The person surrounded by people over there is the president of SY Group, who is also the future spouse of our DH Group’s heiress. Young and talented, incredibly handsome, his photos in financial magazines have always overshadowed those popular young stars. I didn’t expect him to be even more handsome in person. I really envy Emily. If I were her, just waking up every day and seeing such a handsome face would make me so happy.”
Emily: “…” It wasn’t that exaggerated. She was doing just fine, but he was indeed very handsome.
Lily continued to gush, while Summer stood by, barely containing her laughter and almost crying from holding it back.
As the event was about to start, the seating was arranged according to the guests' status. Summer and Emily took seats towards the back.
The host on stage was running through the program. Whether intentionally or not, the camera on the big screen several times focused on Frank Foster sitting in the middle of the first row, causing a wave of excitement each time.
The host looked at him, seemingly wanting him to come up and say a few words. Frank Foster raised his eyes, briefly scanned the camera with a detached gaze, his lips pressed together in a nonchalant yet authoritative manner.
The camera shook and then cut back to the stage, avoiding the first row from then on, including the film emperor and empress seated there.
Summer turned and remarked, “Emily, your husband’s presence is so overwhelming. Just one glance made the cameraman’s handshake. Look at you, your company’s employees only recognize the boss's husband and not you, the small boss. The heir of the group was relegated to an editor at a magazine.”
Emily looked down, fiddling with her freshly done nails, “My dad wants me to gain experience at the grassroots level.”
“Gaining experience isn’t like this. Why not go straight to the headquarters and get trained by an experienced senior to smoothly take over the company? Although your dad treated you well before, as the saying goes, with a new stepmother comes a new father. You can’t listen to him completely. If your stepmother has a younger brother in the future who might take a share of the company, you could be at a disadvantage. You need to learn from your husband and find ways to keep control of the company in your hands, so you don’t end up giving any advantage to that, Rachel.”
Summer, drawing on her experience from playing supporting roles in several dramas about wealthy families fighting over inheritance, advised Emily.
Emily couldn’t help but smile. By the time her parents were preparing for divorce, the Ryan family assets had already been reallocated. Besides the company shares and the house where her father lived, all other assets were transferred to her name. Even the company shares she held were not far behind her father’s.
“Look at your husband, so commanding. I heard he’s now the undisputed leader at SY Group, and even his father is sidelined. Not to mention the illegitimate children his father has outside, who can’t even enter SY headquarters. You should learn from your husband.”
“It’s not that easy. The board members aren’t pushovers. I know nothing about managing the company, and they’d push me aside.” She had brought this up with her father before. When she found out that her father, Mr. Ryan, was involved with someone else. She had a big argument with him. To prevent the mistress from gaining advantage after her parents’ divorce, she proposed taking over the company. However, having lived a carefree life for the first twenty years, she knew nothing about company management. If it weren’t for her parents’ marriage falling apart and the mistress taking a position, she would have continued pursuing her own interests without considering inheriting the family business. Naturally, Mr. Ryan wasn’t willing to hand over the company to her like that.
“Let your husband help you. You’re married. Have him represent you and deal with those shareholders at DH Group. No one would dare to object.”
Emily chuckled, “Do you think he seems very familiar with me?”
Summer: “... Haven’t you been married for over three months? Aren’t you close yet?”
Emily shot her a look, “Put away that naive attitude of yours. It’s a business marriage. He’s already inherited his family’s company and is as busy as a flying trapeze artist. It’s normal for us not to be very close.”
Summer: “...” It was her lack of experience talking. She had never seen someone who said they weren’t close to their spouse after marriage, “So, did he come here today because of you?”
Emily gestured to indicate the distance between Frank Foster and herself, “Does it look like that?”
It didn’t really look like it, but Summer still used her imagination as a low-tier actress.
“Maybe he thought it was too late after the banquet and was worried about you going home alone, so he came to pick you up.”
Emily, with a noble and aloof expression, said, “I have a driver and bodyguards.” Going home alone was not an issue.
Well, rich lady.
Summer went silent.
After the banquet, most of the guests remained, holding their wine glasses and mingling with familiar faces. The owner of Crown International Hotel, David, came over. He and Frank Foster had a good private relationship and chatted for a while. Emily said goodbye to Susan and asked Summer, “Hasn’t your company arranged a car for you yet?”
Summer nodded, “I’ll take a taxi home.”
“My driver is already here. I’ll give you a ride.”
Summer glanced at Frank Foster’s direction, “Aren’t you going with your husband?”
Emily replied, “He probably has business with his friends. I don’t want to waste time waiting for him.”
Her tone was natural, not like a wife having a tiff with her husband, indicating that this was their usual way of interacting.
Even attending the same event, not going home together late at night clearly showed they were distant as a couple.
Summer was convinced.
As they walked a few steps outside, Emily’s phone buzzed. She looked at it and saw a message from Frank Foster.
“Come, ride with me.”
Emily was somewhat surprised and instinctively typed back, “But my driver is already waiting outside.”
