Chapter 1

In the southern city, as October drew to a close, the temperature gradually dropped, and a gentle coolness was mixed in with the breeze. Tonight, a fashion charity gala was being held at the Crown International Hotel, naturally attracting numerous wealthy celebrities to attend. The stars were out in full force, and the flash of cameras never ceased! As an editor for Beauty Magazine, Emily Ryan was currently gathered with her colleagues, listening to some gossip. The event was handled by a planning company, so there wasn’t much for them to do. Lily, the intern Emily was supervising, was attending such a gala for the first time and was bursting with excitement, chattering non-stop in Emily’s ear. Holding her phone, Emily was feeling rather uninterested and was about to go outside to get some fresh air. When she turned around, she saw Summer in a blue evening dress and high heels running towards her. "Emmy…." The banquet hall was crowded. Whether they were socialites or film stars, they all maintained a poised and graceful demeanor. Summer’s running attracted quite a few curious glances, but they quickly looked away. As a D-list actress, she was so obscure that no one recognized her, so naturally, no one would waste time on her. Seeing Summer’s lack of composure, Emily smiled and said, "There are quite a few directors and stars here tonight, cameras everywhere. Can you at least act like a proper actress and watch your manners?" Summer nonchalantly replied, "Not that many people know me anyway." She linked her arm with Emily's and whispered in her ear, "Just giving you a heads-up, I just ran into Rachel outside." Upon hearing Rachel’s name, Emily’s eyes lowered slightly, her displeasure evident. Summer, observing her expression, said, "But even though she’s just started out, she’s an artist for DH Group, so it’s normal for her to be invited to the gala." DH Group has investments in various industries. Beauty Magazine was founded twenty years ago and is a subsidiary of DH Group. Tonight’s gala was initiated by Beauty Magazine. It’s only natural for the company to promote its own artists. Moreover, since her debut, Rachel has been constantly gaining resources. A recently aired historical drama has garnered her quite a following, and she’s on the rise. Emily nodded, and when she looked up again, her expression had returned to normal. "Don’t worry, I’m fine. No matter how much she jumps around, she’s still working for me." Summer silently gave her a thumbs up in her heart. She had to admit, Miss Emily’s ability to self-console was unmatched. Emily was the only daughter of the Ryan family and the sole heir to the DH Group. Her parents were considered a model couple, and Emily grew up cherished by them. It wasn’t until two years ago that she discovered her parents’ marriage had long been broken, and they were merely maintaining appearances for the sake of the company. Mr. Ryan already had another woman outside, and privately, her parents were living apart, not interfering with each other. Three months ago, Emily entered a business marriage with the eldest son of the Fu family, Frank. The two families took their cooperation to the next level, forming a powerful alliance that sent their stock prices soaring. At the same time, Emily's parents’ marriage officially came to an end. Rachel’s mother, Laura, successfully married into the Ryan family. "That may be true, but you can’t let your guard down. She even changed her surname. Who’s to say your father won’t give her some shares under the influence of your stepmother’s pillow talk?" Rachel was Laura’s daughter from her previous marriage, originally named Linda. She changed her name to Rachel when she debuted, back when Emily's parents were still married. Emily’s expression darkened. "She’s dreaming. The company is the fruit of my parents’ joint efforts. If she dares to make a move, I’ll make sure she regrets it." Summer was about to say something else when Lily walked over with a smile. "Emmy, Chief Editor Susan is looking for you." She added enviously, "It seems like she wants to introduce you to more celebrities." In their line of work, dealing with celebrities was part of the job. Susan was the chief editor of Beauty Magazine. She had joined the magazine straight out of college and worked her way up from an intern to the position of editor-in-chief. Not only was she highly capable, but she was also willing to mentor younger colleagues. Susan was unaware that Emily was the heiress of DH Group, but she valued Emily’s sensitivity and talent in fashion and was keen on grooming her, helping her expand her network. Emily glanced at Summer, who nodded and said, "Go ahead, we can talk later." Emily followed Lily to find Susan, who greeted her and a few familiar faces while chatting. Suddenly, a buzz arose outside the door, and many guests inside, seeing who was walking in, rushed to engage in conversation. Susan put on a smile and left Emily behind to greet the newcomer. Emily instinctively turned her head, her gaze falling on the man surrounded by the crowd. Frank Foster was dressed in a black suit, with a tall and upright figure, mature and stern features, and a calm demeanor. As he walked in with long strides, people in front of him naturally stepped aside to clear the way. Noticing her scrutiny, he turned his head, his eyelashes slightly raised, and his gaze met hers. A beam of light illuminated his face, and his signature charming eyes added a touch of deep affection to his face, making one's heart flutter. The most captivating eyes paired with such a cold face were simply an irresistible temptation. Emily paused for two seconds before nonchalantly averting her gaze. She wondered how he could be here since he had just returned to the country tonight??? Emily glanced at the flight information sent by Frank Foster's assistant on her phone. If she remembered correctly, he had landed just after 7 PM. It had been less than an hour since then, and here he was, dressed in a suit and attending the banquet, apparently coming straight from the airport. Summer noticed that Emily wasn't with Susan and came over to wink at her, tilting her chin towards Frank Foster, signaling her to look. Her husband had arrived, and she had to turn around and see him. Emily ignored her, took a glass of red wine from a passing tray, and overheard a discussion about Frank Foster's achievements in the business world. Such big shots rarely attend fashion charity events like tonight's. Everyone couldn’t help but speculate about the reason for his presence and who could have such a high status to invite him. “Isn’t it obvious? Mr. Foster is going to be the future husband of our DH Group. Our magazine is also under him, so of course, he's here to support his wife's company.” Emily, who had wine in her mouth, almost choked upon hearing the term “boss’s husband.” The wine went straight down without much taste, and she instinctively looked at Lily.
