Chapter Six: Shattered Bonds

The silence in the house was deafening after Jake’s abrupt departure. Camilla stood frozen in Ethan’s arms, her heart hammering in her chest. The confrontation had been inevitable, but that didn’t make it hurt any less. Her brother—her best friend, her protector—had looked at her like she was a stranger. Like she had betrayed him in the worst way possible. Ethan pressed a kiss to the top of her head, his arms tightening around her. “Cam… I’m so sorry.” Tears welled in her eyes. “He hates me.” Ethan sighed, resting his chin against her hair. “No, he doesn’t. He’s just hurt. We both knew this wouldn’t be easy.” She swallowed the lump in her throat and pulled away just enough to look up at him. “But I didn’t think it would be like that.” Ethan’s jaw clenched as he ran a hand through his hair, frustration evident in every line of his body. “Jake has always been protective of you. Finding out like this… it was the worst possible way.” Camilla rubbed her arms, suddenly feeling cold. “What do I do now?” Ethan exhaled slowly, reaching for her hand. “Give him time. He needs to cool off.” A bitter laugh escaped her. “You didn’t see the way he looked at me, Ethan. I don’t know if he’ll ever forgive me.” Ethan gently tilted her chin up, forcing her to meet his gaze. “He will. It’s going to take time, but he will. You’re his sister, Cam. He loves you, even if he’s too angry to show it right now.” She searched his face, finding reassurance in his steady expression. But deep down, she couldn’t shake the fear that her relationship with Jake had been irreparably damaged. A sudden thought struck her, and her stomach twisted with unease. “What if he tells our parents?” Ethan frowned. “Would that be a bad thing?” Camilla groaned, rubbing her temples. “You don’t understand. My parents already see me as the little girl who needs to be sheltered from the world. If Jake tells them about us, they’ll freak out. They’ll see this as you taking advantage of me or—” “Hey,” Ethan interrupted, cupping her face gently. “I would never let anyone think that. Especially not your parents.” Camilla bit her lip. “I know. But still… this just got so much more complicated.” Ethan nodded, his expression serious. “We’ll figure it out. Together.” She leaned into him, breathing in his familiar scent, letting the warmth of his presence soothe her frayed nerves. But even as he held her, doubt gnawed at her. Jake wasn’t just her brother—he was Ethan’s best friend. Would their relationship survive this betrayal? The rest of the morning passed in a daze. Camilla tried to distract herself, but everything felt off. She couldn’t sit still, couldn’t focus on anything other than the gnawing dread in her stomach. By the afternoon, she couldn’t take it anymore. She needed to find Jake. She needed to fix this. Ethan, sensing her restlessness, offered to go with her, but she shook her head. “I need to do this alone.” He hesitated before nodding. “Okay. But call me if you need me.” She gave him a small, grateful smile before grabbing her keys and heading out. Jake wasn’t home. Not surprising. He always went to the gym when he needed to blow off steam. Without thinking twice, she drove straight there, her hands gripping the wheel tightly. When she arrived, she spotted him immediately. He was in the back corner of the gym, pounding away at a punching bag, his entire body tense with barely-contained rage. Taking a deep breath, she approached cautiously. “Jake.” He didn’t stop. Didn’t even acknowledge her. “Jake, please talk to me.” His fists slammed into the bag again, harder this time. “What’s there to talk about?” Camilla swallowed the lump in her throat. “I’m sorry. I never wanted to hurt you.” Jake finally stopped, breathing hard. He turned to her, his expression unreadable. “You didn’t just hurt me, Cam. You broke my trust.” Her chest tightened. “I love him.” Jake let out a humorless laugh. “Yeah? And what happens when he leaves? When you’re stuck here, waiting, not knowing if he’s coming back?” Camilla squared her shoulders. “That’s my choice to make.” Jake shook his head. “No, Cam. It’s not just your choice. Because when he leaves, I’ll be the one picking up the pieces when you fall apart.” She flinched at his words. “You don’t know that.” “Don’t I?” He stepped closer, eyes dark with frustration. “You’ve never been in love before. You don’t know what it’s like to watch someone walk away, not knowing if they’ll ever come back. I do. And I won’t let you go through that.” Camilla’s hands clenched into fists. “You don’t get to decide that for me.” Jake’s jaw tightened. “Maybe not. But I can damn well try to protect you from it.” She stared at him, feeling the weight of his words settle deep in her chest. He wasn’t just angry. He was scared. Scared of losing her. Scared of seeing her hurt. Tears burned in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. “I get that you’re trying to protect me. But this isn’t your choice to make, Jake. I love him. And I’m not going to walk away just because it’s hard.” He exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. “God, you’re stubborn.” She managed a small, shaky smile. “You’ve known that since I was five.” For a moment, the anger in his eyes softened. But then, just as quickly, the walls came back up. “I can’t just be okay with this, Cam. Not yet.” She nodded slowly. “I don’t expect you to be. But please… don’t shut me out.” Jake hesitated before sighing. “I need time.” It wasn’t forgiveness. It wasn’t a promise that things would be okay. But it was something. She reached out, squeezing his hand. “I can give you that.” Jake didn’t pull away, but he didn’t squeeze back either. “You should go.” Camilla nodded, her heart aching as she turned to leave. This wasn’t over—not by a long shot. But at least the door wasn’t completely closed. As she walked out of the gym, she pulled out her phone and sent a message to Ethan. I talked to him. It’s not great, but it’s not the end. A response came almost immediately. I’m proud of you. Come home to me. A small smile tugged at her lips as she got into her car. No matter how hard things got, she wasn’t alone. And that was enough.
