“So that’s that,” Zoe said as she and Lorna stepped out of the auto shop. Repairs to Zoe’s car would cost several hundred dollars, the mechanic had said, and would probably only buy it a little time. The thing was a terminal case. Lorna ran over ways in her head to offer to loan Zoe the money, which might at least keep the old junker going until she got to her parents’ place. But she couldn’t find a way to say it without sounding weird. They’d met less than a day ago. She wasn’t sure she could spare several hundred bucks in cash from her trip fund either. “He’ll give me a couple of hundred bucks’ scrap value for it,” Zoe said. “I guess that will buy me a bus or train ticket instead.
