Chapter 13: They all got a letter

783 Words
The police arrived at Kevin and Nora's house within the hour, led by Officer James. They carefully took the letter and examined it for any signs of evidence. Kevin and Nora recounted the events leading up to finding the letter, and the officer listened intently. "So, you didn't see anyone suspicious around the house?" Officer James asked, his eyes scanning the room. Kevin shook his head. "No, nothing out of the ordinary. We came home, and the letter was on the table." Nora spoke up, "The door was locked when we arrived, but I don't remember if I locked it when we left for the police station." The officer made a note. "We'll check for any signs of forced entry, but it seems like whoever did this might have had a key or knew how to pick the lock." Kevin's eyes narrowed. "You think it could be someone we know?" Officer James' expression was grim. "We can't rule it out. Did you notice anything unusual about the letter or the envelope?" Nora thought for a long time, her brow furrowed in concentration. "No, nothing comes to mind. We've always kept to ourselves, and Ann... well, she's not the type to make trouble." Kevin added, "Ever since the incident three years ago, she's been quieter, more withdrawn." The officer's expression didn't change. "We need to explore all possibilities. Can you think of anyone who might be involved?" Kevin and Nora exchanged a look, racking their brains for any leads. The silence stretched out, uncomfortable. The officer continued, "We'll analyze the letter and the phone call. Maybe we can get a lead from the distorted voice or the paper." Just as the officer was about to leave, his phone rang. He stepped into the hallway, his expression serious. Kevin and Nora waited anxiously, wondering what new development had arisen. As Officer James stepped into the hallway, his expression serious as he answered. "Officer James on the line" The voice on the other end was Officer Steve, his tone grave. "Officer James, we've got a situation. The other guardians of the kidnapped victims... they've received similar letters and phone calls." Officer James' eyes narrowed. "What do you mean? What happened?" "Each of them found a red envelope with the words 'GUESS ME' on it," Officer Rodriguez explained. "The letters contain cryptic messages, just like the one Mr and Mrs Wilson received. And they've all gotten calls from the kidnapper, saying they'll release the victims if they solve the riddle." Officer James' grip on the phone tightened. "Are the letters the same as the one the Wilsons got?" "Almost identical," Officer Rodriguez replied. "The wording is different, but the tone is the same. The kidnapper is playing a game with them." Officer James cursed under his breath. "Get the letters to the lab ASAP. We need to analyze them, see if there's any pattern or clue." He listened as Officer Steve updated him on the situation with the other guardians. Each of them was shaken, but they were all cooperating with the police. As Officer James ended the call, his mind was racing. This changed everything. The kidnapper was clearly targeting all the families, trying to manipulate them into solving the riddle. He walked back into the living room, his expression somber. "Mr Wilson Mrs Wilson... the other guardians have received similar letters and calls. The kidnapper is playing a game with all of you." Kevin and Nora exchanged a terrified glance. "What does it mean?" Nora asked, her voice shaking. Officer James' jaw clenched. "It means we're dealing with someone who's organized and ruthless. We'll do everything we can to track them down, but we need your help." The room fell silent, the tension palpable. Kevin and Nora knew they were in this now, and they had to do whatever it took to save Ann. Officer James continued, "We'll work on tracing the calls and analyzing the letters. In the meantime, I want you both to be careful. Don't go anywhere alone, and keep your phones close." As the police continued their investigation, Kevin and Nora couldn't shake the feeling that they were running out of time. The kidnapper's game had just gotten more twisted. Kevin's mind was racing. "Officer, can we see the other letters? Maybe there's something we can notice." Nora nodded. "Yeah, we might be able to spot something the police missed." Officer James hesitated for a moment before nodding. "We’re not allowed to disclose any evidence but I'll see what I can do. Promise me you'll be careful." Kevin and Nora nodded in unison, determination etched on their faces. What do you think Kevin and Nora will find in the other letters?
