Tormented by dreams of his family, Tom lifts his weak body from the spot he's lain tortured for several days. He forages about the dark room searching for his mobile, finding it beneath the bed where he'd thrown it several days ago. The voice in his head stirs. He exhales annoyance.
She's not going to believe you the voice taunts. She'll see through your lies, Tom.
He hesitates, envisioning a barrage of questions from Ellen. She'll question why he hasn't called and what he's been doing. He'd already prepared answers—lies and more lies for her imagined queries.
