Chapter 16 "I think I Seen This Before"

1753 Words
After a few weeks of getting used to the village, doing my duty of tending to the wheat farm. It has come to be a relaxing time here, I developed a routine and that helped me to be more open and active, granted my old wounds still prevent me from strenuous activities. Carla and Cora gave me a name, Cara. I'm still getting used to it, and now everyone knows it so they address me by it. Cora sticks by me all day, everyday. So I asked her general questions to get to know her, and she is very much like me. Same age, birthed in this village, grew up not being so popular amongst her peers because she was too loud ironically, but they all care about her too. Cora keeps asking me questions about my previous living situation, and I try to dodge the subject but today was one of those days where she got all of the others in the wheat field interested. "Come on Cara, please tell me how you became a pet!" She blurted out, stopping me in my tracks, turning to her I said, "Cora, you're drawing attention asking these questions, and me becoming a pet was just by chance, completely out of the blue. Now can I go on to tend to the wheat?" She wasn't happy with the answer since she likes details but she let me go onto my job. "I don't believe you, you know..." Cora said walking behind me. "And what don't you believe miss Cora?" I said still walking forward. "You had to have a name to be a pet, otherwise you would've been slaughtered where ever you were caught before being claimed." Wow she is sharp. "As I said, it was by chance and I didn't have a master who cared for me much so I never got a name. So please drop it Cora." " But Cara I believe-"  "Cora please stop..." But she didn't want to ease up and I felt my emotions starting to boil over, I must hurry up here and go to my room. " Why would you be put here and not stay at the city, what did you do Cara?" " Fine! I did have a name okay! I broke the rules my master had and he no longer wanted me so he threw me to s*******r! Is that okay with you Cora!" I blew up before I could control myself, threw the scythe and ran away to my room before Cora or anyone else could say anything.    I stayed laying face down in my bed, crying, feeling horrible for yelling at Cora when she was just curious. Pondering my thoughts when I hear a knock at my door, though I didn't bother answering they opened the door and I heard them walk in.  "Cara, I'm sorry for upsetting you with my dumb questions." Cora meekly said so I got up and sat at the edge of my bed patting beside me for her to sit too, wiping my eyes. " I'm sorry to for yelling, I just don't want to remember my past."  "I get it now, but I'm still curious, we all are." Cora said gesturing at the door where a bunch of faces peek in with equal curiosity. "Ugh! Fine, but I will only tell you once." I said while I start telling them everything I can remember, recalling all events like they were a horror story. After a long time, and night falling and all of us becoming hungry, we decided it was time to eat and accept everything as it is.  "Wow Cara, everything you went through, makes so much sense with your personality." Betty said, the lady who helped me when I first arrived here.  "I wish I was born here, so much more peaceful even with the fate this village has it's still more wonderful to live here." I said eating and calming down. "Well with next week coming so fast already, we all should make the most of it and start getting our spirits ready for the calling." "Calling?" I said with confusion. "Why yes, every month here they take the chosen ones away to the calling." "are you talking about the s*******r day?" "Yeah." Shocked at Betty's words that they take people away every month here. "So every village is different with their choosing dates." I said in conclusion. "Yeah, we are the only village chosen to do this every month, we are like the death row of  earth. That's why we were so curious about your past." "I see, well it's a good thing I already care for you guys to tell you." I smile with gratitude, and go back to eating  with everyone.    As the days went on, and soon the week went by to the choosing day, or the calling as everyone here calls it. Waking up to get dressed for the day, fixing my hair since it doesn't want to be tame. I took the week to prepare myself for deaths invitation if I am to be chosen with others today, I still liked how they had sessions for s*******r day so no one was scared to emotional.    As everyone was coming out of their rooms and walking out to the center of the village, I joined them and walked along the path of fate. Lining up in rows and waiting for the ship to arrive, I heard people whispering about today being a bigger selection than before. Somehow people were more excited than they were scared, I mean the sessions made me believe that it would be a painless, freeing journey, but still I'm still kind of scared and knowing death is on it's way should be worrisome. As I think about it we all hear that familiar engine sound, getting closer by the second.  And I think back to how it was nice to meet everyone here, Cora's excited facial expressions made it seem like a normal day here, I smiled when she noticed me looking at her, so she waved her hand smiling back widely. The ship landed and the door began opening, to which soldiers walked out and circled around all of us. No one was left out of being chosen, old, young, male, female. everyone here was equal. I guess that's why they come every month. The last one to come out of the ship was the Captain, I was surprised but maintained my composure since I remembered he was always there for the choosing day. I wish I could say I was excited to see him, the situation at hand and the fact that I never saw him after he said he would come back just doesn't make me happy anymore. Yeah it's only been a month since I was dropped here so my feelings are still fresh with him, especially with what he was trying to say before he left. I wonder if he remembers?    The Captain gave orders to his soldiers and they dispatched to start pulling people away to board the ship, As soldiers passed me, I continually looked forward but not at the Captain. Then I felt someone stop beside me, I glance to my side to see a soldier standing there looking down at me then grabbing me to move on. I look back to see Cora still standing there looking forward as well waiting to see if she'll be chosen too. I turn around to keep walking ahead, As I follow the others onto the ship I blurred out my surroundings and focused on my resolve and maintaining the acceptance of it. Seeing the other side of the selection process feels surreal, like something I should've experienced before. But I guess dying once before is equal to this.    There was quite a lot of people in the ship, as they loaded up the last of the chosen ones, I looked around again to see if Cora was chosen, but I didn't see her so that was relieving. She's got a lot of life left in her to be chosen so soon. I heard the door close behind us, being squished together like this isn't really helping to focus on keeping calm, having someone breathe down my neck is too bizarre while I push against someone in front of me to make room. Then I heard the Captain's voice loudly ring out so we could all hear him, "Listen all of you humans, you are being transported to processing so don't try to beg for your meaningless life I don't care about you or anyone in here!" He exclaimed this and it stung to be honest, who knew his words would hurt like this during this time.  "We'll be there in ten minutes, I will put you down if you try to run or fight, and I will make it more harsher then what you will go through there!" He said as the soldiers readied their weapons.    In a few minutes we arrived, as we began walking into the building, The Captain placed himself in front of where everyone was walking towards, as I walked closer I put my head down so that he wouldn't see me, maybe he did but it was my method to be invisible. Next thing I know I've been pushed down along with others, as people are screaming and soldiers are using their weapons on people running. I can't comprehend what's just happened or what's is happening right now, but I need to stay still other wise I'll be put down too. Suddenly I'm pulled up by someone so I immediately look to see who it is and am more shocked that it's the Captain holding onto me as he looks around giving commands to his soldiers to control everyone. My only thought as to why he would do this is why help me now? "Let go of me Captain!" I try to push him away so he doesn't try to ruin my resolve, I don't need anyone anymore to try and save me in any sense. "Sky stop pushing me away and let me help you!" He says as he holds me tighter. "I don't want to be saved! Not anymore! I've accepted my fate!" "Your fate? I want you to be here, now please listen to me!" With that I couldn't bring myself to say anything else, he's giving me hope and I can't help but let him give me that again.
