Chapter 7 – The Unwanted Confession

250 Words
The rain fell in thin, cold needles against the office windows as Camille stood at the edge of Elias’s desk. She hadn’t planned on seeing him tonight. She hadn’t even planned on speaking to him until their next meeting with the lawyers. But the phone call from his assistant had changed everything. Elias didn’t look up right away. He kept writing, pen scratching steadily against paper. “You shouldn’t be here,” he said finally, voice low but edged with something dangerous. Camille took a breath, forcing her voice to remain steady. “We need to talk.” He leaned back, dark eyes fixing on her. “About the deal? Or about the way you’ve been avoiding me like the plague since last week?” Her fingers tightened around her clutch. “This isn’t about avoidance. It’s about honesty.” His laugh was humorless. “Funny. That’s rich coming from you.” Camille’s pulse jumped. “You think I’m the only one keeping secrets? You’ve been—” She cut herself short, biting her tongue before she said too much. Elias stood, the movement slow, deliberate. He rounded the desk until he was only a step away. “Say it, Camille.” She met his gaze, every nerve on edge. “You’re still in love with me.” The silence that followed was deafening. Elias’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t deny it. Instead, he said quietly, “And that’s exactly why this divorce is going to ruin us both.”
