CHAPTER 6: THE TRUCK DRIVER

282 Words
The truck slowed down. Then stopped right in front of her. Dust rose into the air, making Amara step back slightly. Her heart pounded as the driver’s door opened. A man climbed down. Tall. Serious. Watching her carefully. “What are you doing here?” he asked. “I’m going to Lagos,” Amara replied. The man frowned. “Alone?” She nodded. He looked at her for a moment, then shook his head. “You ran away,” he said. Amara said nothing. ⸻ The sun burned above them. The road stretched endlessly. “You think Lagos is easy?” the man asked. “I will work,” she said. “Doing what?” “Anything.” ⸻ The man studied her. “You know this road is not safe?” he said. “Not everyone will stop to help you.” A small fear passed through her—but she didn’t step back. “I already left,” she said quietly. “If I go back… nothing will change.” ⸻ The words stayed between them. The man exhaled. Then turned toward his truck. ⸻ Amara’s heart dropped. He’s leaving. ⸻ The engine rumbled. He paused. Looked back at her. ⸻ “Can you sit quietly?” he asked. ⸻ Amara blinked. “Yes.” ⸻ He nodded toward the truck. “Climb.” ⸻ She didn’t hesitate this time. She rushed forward and pulled herself into the back. The engine roared. The truck began to move. ⸻ Amara held tightly as the road started to disappear behind her. The wind rushed against her face. For the first time— She wasn’t just walking toward Lagos. She was getting closer.
