The Last Soldier to Uphold the Law in South Yemen
After the war of ’94, when Aden was invaded by tribes from North Yemen, a decree was issued banning cars without number plates from going through checkpoints.
One day, a senior tribal sheikh from the North and his entourage were coming from Sana’a, and arrived at the second checkpoint into Aden. Ten cars, all without number plates. They wanted to go through the checkpoint.
The Southern soldier stationed there stopped them.
Sheikh: I’m Sheikh H!
Soldier: None of your cars have number plates, and I’ve got orders.
Sheikh: I told you, I’m Sheikh H!
Soldier: I’ve never heard of you, and I don’t care.
