KEYS TO THE IRON GATE There are iron gates everywhere in the city to courtyards to garages. From age-old buildings in the Stare misto (the Old Town) and passageways into courtyards to what they call here the New Ukrainian or kruti (crooked) businessmen’s homes on streets like Pryroda (Nature) Street next to the Forestry University buildings and grounds. The courtyard at the Armenian Cathedral seemed to always be locked with a key and a padlock with chains – along with a pile of rocks near the entryway to the courtyard. The rocks seemed to say something to Nicholas. Although at first glance they seemed to be just rocks, placed there randomly in a pile near the black wrought iron gate, Nicholas felt they weren’t random. There were large and small keys everywhere in the Museum of Antiquities
