THE GUN POWDER TOWER Two reposing smiling and stately lions guard the entrance to the stone turret-like tower not far from Rynok Square. It was built (according to guidebooks and histories of the city) in 1554-1556. One particular guidebook had said it was horseshoe shaped, but when Nicholas went to see it, he thought it was more like an oval cut off at one end. It was something like the shape of a running track with the entrance side flattened. It only had a few windows in the middle of it and at the top as well as in the front. It was, of course, a storage tower for gunpowder, so no need for much sunlight in there. The lions in front were so friendly and playful that they seemingly invited you to play with them.
