As Rael left Hargath’s office, he could feel the weight of the academy’s politics pressing in on him from all sides. He’d stepped into something much bigger than petty rivalries between recruits. Hargath’s warnings about the shadow faction made it clear: the academy was a boiling pot, and Rael was just waiting for it to spill over. He returned to his quarters with a plan forming in his head. Before he could settle in, though, the academy’s bells rang—a sharp, piercing sound that reverberated through the entire campus. “What now?” Rael muttered, grabbing his gear. As he made his way toward the main courtyard, he saw groups of recruits assembling, their faces a mix of confusion and excitement. Captain Olysia stood at the center of the gathering, her arms crossed, watching as everyone trickled in. Rael joined Vynn, who was already looking around nervously. “You heard what this is about?” Vynn asked. “Nope, but I’m guessing it’s not a surprise birthday party,” Rael replied dryly. Olysia stepped forward, her voice booming across the courtyard. “Attention! You’ve all been called here because it’s time for the academy’s Trial by Fire. This is a mandatory mission, and none of you are exempt.” Her eyes swept over the crowd, lingering on Rael for just a moment. “This is not a simple exercise. This mission will test your teamwork, your magic, and your combat skills. Some of you might not come back.” A murmur rippled through the crowd, but Rael just stood still, processing the words. He had a feeling things were about to get messy. Olysia continued, “You will be divided into teams. Each team will have a specific objective. Success means recognition and potential advancement. Failure means… well, you’ll find out.” Her smile was sharp, almost cruel. As she began calling out the team assignments, Rael barely listened, until his name was called. “Rael Phaze. Vynn Telder. Miris Calthorne.” Rael’s attention sharpened as his teammates were revealed. Vynn, the overeager but competent recruit, was a familiar face. Miris, however, was a wildcard—she was a skilled mage with a reputation for ruthlessness. He had seen her take down multiple opponents during their trials with a combination of fire and earth magic, and she didn’t seem the type to play nice. The team gathered near the edge of the courtyard. Miris glanced at Rael, her eyes cold. “Looks like I’m stuck with you, Lightning Tamer,” she said, her voice laced with sarcasm. Rael smirked. “Don’t worry, I’ll do my best to carry you.” Vynn snorted, trying to suppress his laughter. Miris didn’t seem amused. “I’m not here to babysit.” “Neither am I,” Rael shot back. Before tensions could escalate further, Olysia announced the mission objectives. “Your team is tasked with retrieving an artifact deep within the Ghostwoods. It’s an ancient relic protected by dangerous creatures and hostile environments. You’ll need to work together if you want to survive. And just so we’re clear, this is not a simulation. If you die, you’re dead. No healers to save you.” Rael’s pulse quickened. The Ghostwoods were notorious for their magical disturbances, home to elemental creatures that didn’t take kindly to intruders. The academy was throwing them straight into the fire. “Move out!” Olysia barked, and the recruits began dispersing toward the gates. The Ghostwoods were a dense, shadowy forest that seemed to swallow sound and light. As Rael, Vynn, and Miris approached, the atmosphere grew heavier, the air thick with magic. They moved quietly, their senses on high alert. Vynn whispered, “I’ve heard stories about this place. People come in and don’t come out.” “Not helping,” Miris muttered, her eyes scanning the tree line. Rael, however, was focused on something else. He could see the shifting prismatic patterns of elemental energy all around them, swirling like a storm of magic. The forest was alive, and it wasn’t friendly. “Stay close,” Rael said. “This place is full of surprises.” As they ventured deeper into the woods, the ground beneath them trembled, and suddenly, the trees came alive. Branches twisted and coiled like serpents, reaching out to ensnare them. Rael reacted first, his Prismatic Cognition kicking into gear. He saw the elemental patterns forming around the trees—earth and wood magic intertwining—and quickly adjusted the flow, redirecting it. With a flick of his wrist, Rael broke the enchantment, causing the branches to fall limp. “Keep moving,” he urged. But the forest wasn’t done with them. Moments later, a massive elemental creature burst from the ground—a hulking mass of stone and earth, its glowing eyes fixed on them. “s**t,” Vynn muttered, drawing his sword. “What do we do?” Miris stepped forward, her hands already glowing with fire magic. “We kill it,” she said, her voice hard. She unleashed a torrent of flames at the creature, but the fire barely scorched its rocky hide. Rael watched the elemental’s energy patterns, seeing where the creature was weakest. “Aim for the joints,” he called out, drawing his sword and charging forward. Miris redirected her flames toward the creature’s knees, and Rael followed, slashing at the weakened stone with precision. The elemental roared, swinging a massive arm at them, but Vynn intercepted, his sword glowing with a faint magical aura as he deflected the blow. Rael moved swiftly, his Prismatic Cognition allowing him to predict the elemental’s next attack. He dodged to the side, delivering a powerful strike to the back of its leg, causing the creature to stumble. Miris seized the opportunity, summoning a burst of fire that exploded at the elemental’s core, sending it crumbling to the ground in a heap of rubble. The team stood in silence for a moment, catching their breath. “Nice work,” Rael said, nodding to Miris. She didn’t return the sentiment, but her expression softened slightly. “Let’s keep moving. The artifact isn’t going to find itself.”
