Chapter 3; Intruder

2335 Words
8:40 am, The next morning. I sat on the porch, my knees pulled to my chest as I heard Ben howl in the distance. Last night was the full moon and he needed to run. It had been a while since I was around wearwolves, so the sight of a large red wolf walking out of the woods almost startled me out of my thoughts. Ben's wolf was massive his dark brown fur showed highlights of red when it it the sunlight just so. He was getting a bit of grey around his muzzle, but his yellow green eyes were always the most startling. Can a wolf ever get some privacy? I know you like me naked, but geeze. Ben's voice echoed in my mind as he sent me a mind-link. I smirked, but kept my eyes on him. Ben knew I got no s****l gratification. Anytime I chose a partner is was simply for their pleasure. He shook his fur before shifting back into his human form and walking over to the rock at the edge of the forest where he had placed his clothes. Ben was a tall, well built, not overly hairy; but just enough that it truly enhanced his looks. He had thick arms and just enough tattoos to make someone think "oh, he's a bad boy." His dark brown hair, lighly salt and peppered beard, hazel eyes, and sharp features were enough to make most females swoon. I let my eyes go down to his manhood, and like many wolves he was blessed. "Stare at me any longer and I'll bend you over this rock," Ben growled before giving me a toothy grin. His canines were still elongated. He was still feeling the power from the full moon and the adrenaline from his shift. The full moon unleashes a lot of power to a lot of supernaturals - it almost makes them turn animalistic. Ben knew he couldn't make me do anything. I was the top of the food chain in the supernatural world and that made a lot of species fear me. Ben was pulling a simple grey tshirt over his head when he approached, "Eve awake?" The feral look in his eyes was quickly fading. "Hm, probably not. She was still sleeping when I walked out here." I responded accepting his offer to help me to my feet. I grasped his forearm and let him pull me upwards. We stood there for a moment grasping each others forearm. He was searching my eyes for something - a feeling perhaps. I broke eye contact after a minute. Feeling something shift deep down in my soul. "Let's get you breakfast. I'm sure you're starving." I broke his concentration letting go of him and pulling open the screen door to the cabin. As Ben opened the main door the smell of waffles, fresh fruit, coffee, orange juice, sausage, bacon and eggs his us both square in the face. "Benjamin! I made you breakfast. I figured you would be hungry after the full moon," Eve replied handing Ben a plate. He immediately got started piling his plate high with food. "Doomsday you're more than welcome to join him," Eve placed a comforting hand on my shoulder, "I just know your form of sustenance is different from Ben's." She smiled as Ben turned around with his mound of breakfast foods while trying to balance coffee and OJ in his free hand. I couldn't help but smile as Eve glided over to help him. --- 11 a.m. The Study. Eve was thumbing through books. She sat criss crossed in the floor of her massive Library surrounded by towers of books. A pair of reading glasses perched on her nose. Ben was softly snoring in the corner, a large book covering his face. He was still in a food coma from breakfast. "Oh I know!" Eve suddenly exclaimed, clapping her hands together. "You say she's bright and fair haired, similar to yourself?" she began, "She has to be related to Queen Aine!" I stopped Flipping through the book I had been looking at and consider, "Aine is nearly 100 years old." Eve hopped to her feet, "Yes but she has five daughters the younger two easily could be her mother." It sounded entirely plausible, "but why give up your child? You placed a spell on them that allows them to hide without fear of being found. Wouldn't you rather keep your child?" "The only way to know is perhaps find them. It won't be easy, but you may be the only one who can. If Shelby isn't eighteen yet then her abilities will be dormant, but once she reaches eighteen she will quite litterally become a sitting duck for all vampires." Eve walked over to pick up a small wooden box, she pulled a small silver chain with a clear orb charm from it. "Shelby will be able to find her people, but because she wasn't trained to harness her light it will be nearly impossible. This will help you both." Eve handed me the necklace. I studdied it for a moment before holding it up into the light. Once I did a large ray projected onto the south wall of the room. I looked to Eve for support, she smiled, "Follow the light and you will find the Fae." "What if this falls in the wrong hands?" I tucked it away into my jacket pocket. "You have my blessing, they don't." Eve smiled mischievously, "I also feel that you would be able to protect it." I walked over to give Eve a hug, "Thank you for everything." Eve accepted my hug, she smelled like the earth, her aura green and earthy. It felt like home. "Well I hate to break up this love fest but D and I should probably head back to the City." Ben suddenly spoke getting up from the chair he had been napping in a minute before. Eve frowned, but then nodded, "May the goddess be with you, Blessed be." --- 2 p.m. A Ma n' Pa Gas Station outside of San Francisco I looked over my sunglasses watching the digital numbers flash 8... 9... 10... as the pump ticked with each gallon of gas. I pulled the crumpled up piece of paper with the address out of my pocket one last time to memorize the address: 346 sycamore lane. I pulled the toothpick I had been chewing on and flicked it across the pump. If I don't find this b***h soon it'll be the end of me. My sources had spotted her frequenting the apartment complex the last couple of months. Probably squatting in one of her victims apartments. I thought to myself. Another innocent life probably taken to soon. The pump gave one final click signaling the tank was full. I replaced the nozzle. I turned around to find a big brested, bottle hair blonde strutting my way, "Hey 'mister, need some company?" She purred. "No thanks," I responded turning to screw the gas cap back on. "What are you... gay?" she laughed, one of those annoying laughs that make you want to strangle the person. I smiled, turning towards her, "Yeah, something like that." There's that f*****g laugh again. I internally groaned opening the door to my 1965 Pontiac GTO. Before I knew it she was smooshing her breasts onto the side of the passenger door, trying to lean in to continue our conversation. "Hey, I really need to get to San Fransico. Could you just give me a lift, pleaseee?" She said sticking out her bottom lip in an attempt to pout. And they say men can't take "no" for an answer. This broad probably wasn't going to leave me alone and I needed to get rid of her. "Sorry doll I have buisness I need to take care of." I practically ground the words through my teeth. I caught her eyes drift to the back seat where a AK-47 laid on the seat. "What are you, some kind of hitman?" She started to laugh again, "Yeah, kind of." I started the car and she stepped back startled and obviously suprised. I managed to drive off without her chasing after me. I watched her in the rear view standing in a cloud of dust graceful enough to flip me the bird before looking for her next victim. Hopefully he wouldn't be human. --- 7:15 p.m. The Apartment I swung my leg back over Ben's bike. We had just arrived back at the apartment and I could tell the long ride had taken a toll on him. He let out a yawn before saying, "Whelp, its been fun D, don't be a stranger," he extended his hand. I grabbed his forearm and he grabbed mine, we shook once before releasing. "I don't mean to be. I've just been taking the time to travel more," I said before taking a few steps back as Ben revved his engine. "You've seen the world D, what are you looking for?" Ben asked and I shrugged, "Settle down and allow yourself to be happy." I could feel the gravity of his words. He ment it, but my kind didn't exactly "settle down." I just nodded, gave him a salute and turned around. When he was out of sight I jumped, landing on the third story windowsill. I made my way to the fire escape and up to the ninth floor. As I swung into the apartment window off the fire escape I was hit with a familiar smell. It smelt like cheap beer and cigarettes. Without turning on a light I could see the place had been ransacked. Debris covered the floor worse than before and furniture tossed onto its side or laying in broken shambles. Whoever was here was looking for something. Immediately I pulled my gun from my waistband and started to do a sweep of the apartment. Perhaps they were still here. The front door was still intact. Every corner I rounded I found more mess. Eventually the apartment was cleared. Perhaps it was someone looking for the previous tenant. I allowed myself to relax, I plopped down on the couch and sat my pistol on the table before fishing into my pocket for the necklace Eve gave me. I held it up and even in the natural dim night light of the city a faint light pointed to the south. I'll visit Shelby in the morning. Hopefully this won't freak her out too much- my thoughts were interrupted by a noise coming from the bathroom. I had cleared the apartment and no one was here except for me. Quietly I stood, placing the necklace back into my pocket and picking up my pistol before making my way to the bathroom door. As I got closer the same sound repeated. It sounded as if someone was climbing down from the ceiling. I paused when I got to the door, holding my breath, I didn't nessasarily need to breathe; but it had become muscle memory to look more human and blend in. I swiftly landed a kick to the center of the door causing it to explode on impact. I had hoped the sudden explosion would be enough to startle whatever was on the other side. I entered the bathroom halfway, pistol drawn, "What the f**k?" the intruder exclaimed. I then realized, Goddess not this ass hat. "Doomsday." He spat, his pistol drawn as well. He had a rifle slung over his back and looked as if he was ready for war. "What the f**k do you think you're doing?" I spat keeping my pistol pointed at him. "You can't get rid of me that easily," He started towards me, which in turn caused me to back away, "You f****d up my life and now I've made it my goal to f**k up yours." I couldn't help but smirk. The last fifty centuries have been a living hell. One angry human wouldn't make it any worse. He tried to take my drop in guard as an opportunity. He pushed his pistol forward in an attempt to hit me in the face but I caught his wrist with no effort. I lifted him off the ground putting my face inches from his, my eyes flashing cyan, "I don't want to hurt you. I have no reason to, but you're certainly trying to get on my s**t list." He took the opportunity of my exposed side to kick violently to the sidebwith his heel. It was enough for me to release my grip. He tumbled away and landed in a crouching position a foot in front of me. In the tussle he had dropped his handgun which had clattered across to the other side of the room. In a desperate attempt he ducked to grab it. He was quick but I was quicker. I grabbed him by the collar of his jacket and hoisted him high, my eyes blazing cyan. I knew he could feel the energy of the room buzzing. "Get. out." I said through clenched teeth. I tossed him carelessly a few feet through the front door of the apartment and it busted into wood shards on impact. I could hear the screams of a few female tenants. Well there goes my hideout. Picking up his pistol I shoved it into the waistband of my pants, "Not like you need this anymore," in one graceful motion I took a running leap out of the side window and landed on the rooftop of the neighboring building then a few feet down into the next alleyway. Hopefully a visit to the hospital for a few days will keep you off my back for a little while. I knew I hadn't gotten rid of him forever, but it did give me some times to gather my bearings and find a new spot to crash. I had let my guard down and allowed myself to get comfortable. That won't happen again.
