Chapter 4: The Guardian's Trial
The forest exploded into chaos.
Massive roots burst from the earth as Eldros slammed his wooden fists into the ground. Trees bent at his command, trapping dozens of Hollowborn beneath thick vines.
But they kept coming.
Their crimson eyes glowed through the smoke like burning coals.
"Stay behind me!" Lyra shouted, raising her silver sword.
A Hollowborn lunged.
She spun gracefully, her blade slicing through its shadowy body. The creature dissolved into black mist.
Kael gripped Rowan's hammer with both hands.
"I'm done running."
He charged.
The first Hollowborn swung its jagged claws.
Kael ducked just in time and slammed the hammer into its chest.
Nothing happened.
The creature laughed.
"Your weapon cannot harm us."
It raised its claws for the final strike.
Suddenly, the Ember Seal on Kael's hand blazed with golden light.
The glow spread into the hammer, turning the old blacksmith's tool into a weapon wrapped in living fire.
Kael swung again.
BOOM!
The Hollowborn shattered into thousands of glowing embers.
Kael stared at the hammer.
"It... changed."
Lyra smiled.
"The Ember Seal awakened it."
One by one, the Hollowborn attacked.
Kael fought with growing confidence, each strike of the enchanted hammer sending enemies flying into bursts of light.
High above the battlefield, the horned commander watched silently.
His black armor shimmered like smoke.
"So..." he murmured.
"The legends were true."
He raised his sword toward the sky.
"Enough."
Dark clouds swallowed the sunlight.
A wave of black energy spread across the forest.
The ancient trees began to wither.
Even Eldros staggered.
"My strength..." the guardian groaned.
The Hollowborn commander stepped forward.
"I am General Varkor, first servant of the Hollow King."
He pointed his blade at Kael.
"Give me the Ember Bearer."
Eldros roared.
"You shall never claim him!"
The guardian charged.
The two giants collided with a force that shook the forest.
Wood crashed against shadow steel.
The earth split beneath their feet.
Kael had never seen such power.
As the battle raged, a glowing voice echoed inside Kael's mind.
"The First Crown..."
"Find the First Crown..."
Kael looked around.
No one else seemed to hear it.
Again the voice whispered.
"Follow the light..."
A faint golden path appeared beneath his feet, winding toward the heart of the forest.
"Lyra!" Kael called.
"I think something is calling me!"
She glanced at the glowing trail.
Her eyes widened.
"The Forest Spirit..."
"Go!" she shouted. "I'll hold them off!"
Kael hesitated.
"I can't leave you!"
"You must! If the First Crown falls into the Hollow King's hands, this war is already lost!"
Trusting her, Kael sprinted along the glowing path.
The sounds of battle faded behind him.
The forest grew strangely peaceful.
At the end of the trail stood a magnificent crystal lake, its water shining like liquid glass.
In the center of the lake rested a stone pedestal.
Upon it floated a crown forged from pure golden flame.
The First Ember Crown.
As Kael stepped toward it, the water rippled.
A graceful figure rose from the lake.
She wore silver robes woven from water and light, her long hair flowing like a river.
"I am Seraphine," she said softly.
"Keeper of the First Crown."
Her gentle expression hardened.
"Only one proven worthy may claim it."
She lifted her hand.
The lake erupted into towering waves.
"Face my trial... or leave forever."
Kael tightened his grip on his glowing hammer.
"I didn't come this far to turn back."
Seraphine smiled faintly.
"Then let the Trial of Courage begin."
A giant creature of water emerged behind her, roaring loud enough to shake the heavens.
