Chapter 5: The First Ember Crown The crystal lake trembled. The towering Water Guardian rose higher and higher until its head touched the mist above the trees. Its body shimmered like living glass, and its glowing blue eyes locked onto Kael. Seraphine stepped aside. "The Trial of Courage is not about strength," she said calmly. "It is about the heart." Without warning, the Water Guardian struck. A massive wave crashed toward Kael. He leaped aside just in time, rolling across the wet stones. The creature attacked again, this time with giant arms of swirling water. Kael swung his ember-forged hammer. The fiery weapon passed through the water without slowing the Guardian. "It's useless!" Kael gasped. The Guardian roared, sending another wave that knocked him into the lake. As he sank beneath the surface, panic filled his chest. Then he saw something impossible. Deep below the water were hundreds of glowing figures. Warriors... Kings... Queens... All wearing Ember Crowns. One of them looked directly at Kael. A woman with fiery red hair smiled gently. "Fear is not the absence of courage," her voice echoed in his mind. "Courage is choosing to stand, even when you're afraid." The vision disappeared. Kael burst back to the surface, breathing hard. He understood. This battle wasn't meant to be won by force. The Water Guardian charged again. This time... Kael dropped his hammer. He stood still. He didn't run. He didn't attack. "I won't fight you," he said firmly. "I choose courage over fear." The Guardian stopped. The lake became perfectly calm. For a long moment, nothing happened. Then the giant smiled. Its body dissolved into thousands of glowing droplets that floated into the sky like stars. Seraphine nodded with pride. "You have passed." The First Ember Crown floated gently toward Kael. As he reached out, it settled onto his head. Golden fire burst into the heavens. The Ember Seal on his hand blazed brighter than ever. A warm voice echoed through the forest. "The First Crown has chosen its king." Suddenly, Kael felt new strength flowing through him. He could sense the life in every tree, every stone, every drop of water. But the peaceful moment didn't last. A thunderous explosion shook the lake. General Varkor smashed through the ancient trees, his black sword dripping with dark energy. Behind him, Lyra staggered into view, wounded but alive. "Kael!" she cried. "Run!" Varkor laughed. "So... you claimed the Crown before I could." He raised his sword. "It changes nothing." Darkness spread across the lake, swallowing its crystal waters. Kael stepped forward, the First Ember Crown glowing with brilliant light. "I won't let you destroy this place." Varkor smiled beneath his horned helmet. "Then prove you're worthy of wearing that crown." He charged. Fire met shadow. The fate of the First Crown would be decided in a single clash.
