The Bitter-Sweet Dinner

1587 Words
Clara was sure that Roland Dominic must have lost his mind! She didn't think her brother-in-law could do something as presumptuous as that in their office. Clara could even still feel the remnants of his breathing and his deep voice, especially when Roland asked her the absurd question about being 'pregnant'. Clara held her head dizzily. Fortunately, the knock on Roland's door was heard at that time, so Clara didn't have to force herself to reply. Although, Clara really wanted to slap Roland's handsome face to restore his sanity, 'cause what Roland had done absolutely had made Clara feel even more guilty about Monica, her sister. And now, Clara is driving a car while Monica is sitting in the passenger seat. Yes, she had just picked up her sister from JFK Airport to drive her to the Dominic family's main mansion. "Why, Clara? Even though I was playing with my phone, I knew you were looking at me." Monica suddenly raised her voice, making Clara gasp in surprise at being caught glancing at Monica through the rear-vision mirror. "So, do you have something to say?" Monica continued to ask. "Ah? No-nothing! I just didn't expect you to come back so soon, Monica." Clara tried to hide her nervousness. "Hm? A month went fast for you?" "Well, you've been in Germany for six months before. I hear your news projects in Norway are much bigger than that. So I think you'll be there a lot longer." Before her marriage to Roland Dominic, Monica Barton was already very famous in the television world. She was a successful reporter, pretty, sexy, and with the Barton family background behind her name, it was a privilege. No wonder why Monica's job is so busy. She also loved traveling to report on other countries. Monica nodded her head. "Yeah, you're right. That's how it should be. I actually still have to go back to Norway, though. But unfortunately, I miss my husband so much." Clara was stunned, while Monica finally looked up to see Clara in the rear-vision mirror. She smiles sweetly. "Yeah, I should miss my husband, right? People say I should. So, here I am!" That thick-lipped woman snorted. "In my previous project, people even criticized me for not coming back for six months. They were worried about my husband being married to a career-crazy woman like me, Clara. Isn't that amazing? Why don't they become Roland's wives then?" Monica laughed amusedly while Clara could only grimace. "Well, the more famous someone is, the more gossipers there are," Monica continued in a haughty tone. "Ye-yeah...," Clara replied quietly. "Anyway, how's your mom, Clara? Is she still as sickly as the last time I saw her? I feel so sorry for you, especially your mom. It's too bad that Dad and I can't be of much help to you. But, don't worry! I promise I'll pay you for picking me up today!" Clara's grip on the steering wheel tightened. Yeah, that's how Monica is. When she spoke, she could always make the other person lose their voice to reply. Monica was just relaying facts indeed, but those facts were never something Clara wanted to hear from her. Clara smiled slightly and said, "Thanks, Monica." "Hahaha, no need to thank me!" Monica didn't seem to notice the change in her sister's expression. "But well, I know. You must be very grateful to have a sister like me. Even though we're only half-siblings, I'm not as bad as my mom and our other relatives, right? I know very well how hostile they are to you and your mom," that red-haired woman continued, still in a proudly haughty tone. "Yeah, you're right. Thanks!" Clara replied while quietly sighing softly. Just in time for dinner, their car arrived at the Dominic family's main mansion. The large building with classic European accents towered over Clara and Monica when they got out of the car. Monica then entered the mansion, which was immediately greeted by a dozen maids, while Clara followed from behind because Monica asked her to come inside. Now, Monica and Clara had arrived at the dining room where Roland and Gordon Dominic were waiting to have dinner together. "I'm quite surprised that Roland told me to come here, Granpa," she said, and approached Gordon. "Hi, sweetheart! How are you?" Gordon greeted her enthusiastically as he pulled Monica's body into his arms. Monica and Gordon give a brief hug to each other. "I'm great, Granpa. I'm always great." On the other hand, Roland actually glanced at Clara who was standing behind Monica. He grinned briefly when he recalled the incident at the office before. But when Clara turned to him, he hurriedly smiled sweetly. "Thank you for today, Clara. Did you have dinner? Come and join us!" he suddenly invited in a friendly voice. "What do you mean Roland?!" Gordon snapped, giving Clara a sharp look. "She's not a member of Dominic's family! What's the point of joining us?" Reflexively, Clara looked down and took a deep breath at what Gordon said. She wasn't even too surprised by Gordon's reaction anymore, 'cause Gordon had often insulted her just because of her status as the daughter of Monica's father's second wife. "Oh come on, Granpa! Clara is part of my family. She has also been a great help to me today. Let her have dinner here, please?" Monica came to Clara's defense. "Umm, I think Mr. Gordon is right, Monica." Clara said unpleasantly. "I'd better leave so you can have dinner in comfort." "Nope! You've done me a favor today, Clara. After this, you still have to take me home, right?" Clara gave a small grimace. "So, I hope Granpa will let Clara have dinner with us tonight. Please?" A hopeful smile from Monica was given to Gordon Dominic. Gordon momentarily still looked sharply at Clara. But finally, he relenting. "Fine! Just for tonight! I won't tolerate it for another day!" Monica and Roland naturally smiled. Monica then asked Clara to sit in the chair next to her, with Gordon at the head of the table, and Roland across from Monica. They then began to eat their dinner quietly. In that luxurious dining room, the chairs at the long table were only filled by four people. Even if Roland, Monica, and Clara weren't there, Gordon Dominic would have been alone every day. Ever since William Dominic and Bianca Dominic, Roland's parents, passed away 27 years ago, Gordon has spent his days in solitude. No wonder why the old man was so happy to have his grandson and granddaughter-in-law present at this dinner. And, as if not wanting to waste any more time, Gordon quickly finished his meal while the others were still eating. He then folded both hands on the table and focused all his attention on Monica to restart their conversation. "So, Monica, when will grandpa get a great-grandson from you?" "Granpa...." Roland reprimanded. "Monica is even still eating. Can we skip that topic until dinner is over?" "I didn't ask you, Roland Dominic! Don't set me up!" Gordon returned his gaze to Monica. "So, sweetheart, how was it? Do you have any plans for the birth of our successor to Dominic's family? I'd be happy if your first child was a boy. Then I'd be much happier if you gave me many grandchildren. Girls are fine too." Monica tried to keep her smile to reply, "I'm still thinking about it, Granpa. Next month, I have to go back to Norway. So, it's hard for me to--" "Oh, come on! Is Roland not providing with you properly?" Gordon looked displeased. "You're overdoing your career, Monica. If you continue like that, when will you have children?" "Granpa, I just need more--" "Fine!" Gordon interrupted Monica again. "If Roland can't, let Granpa give you everything! Say whatever you want, I'll give it to you as long as you agree to get pregnant!" The sound of slamming spoons and forks was suddenly heard from Monica's direction. Monica had just made everyone at the table jump in surprise. That elegant woman's expression was not as calm as before. Both of her eyebrows were sharply knitted and she had a cold look on her face. "I'm done! Thanks for this bitter-sweet dinner!" she said as she stood up from her chair and turned to Clara. "Clara, you're done, right? Come take me home!" Without waiting for their reaction and without even saying goodbye to Gordon or Roland, Monica walked away. Clara was momentarily stunned along with the others. But she hurriedly drank and stood up, then nervously bowed to Gordon and Roland before quickly following Monica. Finally, the dining room was left with only Roland and Gordon in their respective chairs. "Look what you did, Grandpa!" Roland exhaled harshly. "I've often warned you how sensitive that topic is for Monica, but you never heard me!" Gordon glared. "So you're blaming me, huh?! I mean, is it wrong to ask about my future great-grandson? It's her job to give birth to our successor, Roland! You guys aren't young anymore! I'm even worried that woman is too old to be pregnant right now!" "Granpa!" Roland rubbed his face roughly. He looked very annoyed but also could no longer reply to his grandpa's words. Gordon snorted. "Your wife is just useless, and so are you! But you must still obey me, Roland! You must tell her to get pregnant and give birth soon or you and Monica will lose everything from me! Everything!" ***
