LUCENT
This place was colder than the Winter Court. I shivered and held my hands by the fire. The house was a rustic log cabin mansion.
It kind of reminded me of the house I saw in that human television show Yellowstone. It was one of my guilty pleasures and the other fae could not understand my obsession.
Who wouldn’t be obsessed with messy family drama, money, and power?
“Lucent?” I was startled out of my thoughts as an older gentleman with wavy hair, a flannel shirt, jeans, and heavy boots came into the room.
“Yes, may I ask who you are?” His blue eyes twinkled as he smiled. He was handsome but I was hoping he was not my husband-to-be.
“I am Sven, I am to be your father-in-law.” I gasped and dropped a curtsey. He hurried over and helped me up. His breath caught in his chest and he let out a rattling cough.
I saw him gasping and led him over to a chair by the fireplace. I didn’t know what I could do for him but I needed to do something.
I knelt in front of him and sent some healing energy into him. I gasped as I was thrown back on my butt.
His eyes widened and he rubbed his chest. “What did you just try to do to me child?”
He wasn’t angry and I was relieved about that but there was something disgusting in him that was causing his illness.
I wiped my hands on my pants and tried not to make a face. It was like tar and it wanted to attach its sickness to me.
“I tried to heal you, but I guess being an Alpha King your power was too much for me.” Looking down at my hands I noticed some black trickles in my veins.
I didn’t lie to him; he was more powerful than me. I just didn’t know how to tell him about that grossness in him.
The Fae could not lie, but we could bend the truth.
“That was kind of you, but there is nothing you can do. I will die and I will join Odin in the Wild Hunt.” Nodding, I understood he was dying. There was a small part of me that wanted to try and cure him though.
“I seemed to have at least eased your cough for now.” He smiled at me and I couldn’t help but grin.
“Yes, you did. What a clever girl you are.” Blushing I glanced down at the floor again.
“I don’t believe my son will be coming back tonight. I will have one of the fourth-level omegas show you to your quarters.” I needed to learn more about the place I was living in and the history of his pack.
“Do you think the Omega could tell me about this place and the history of your pack?” His eyes brightened up and then something flickered in them.
“That should be done by my son. He is an ungrateful brat!” There was that darkness again that seemed to leak into his eyes, traveling along the blood vessels.
“I’m curious do you have any records of your illness? I was studying medicine back home.” It was a half-truth. I was curious about different illnesses and treating them, Mother said it was a waste of my talents.
So I was forced to grow some medicinal herbs but I never knew what they could truly do. It was frustrating. Fairie was abundant with ways to cure illness as well as ways to cause illness. It was a fragile balance.
“How amusing, we have a few pack members that are doctors, I will have them send you their records and you can look over them. I will have them send you the records for the past Alpha Kings as well.” He took a deep breath and I could see he was growing tired.
“Have the other Alpha Kings suffered the same illness?” This was fascinating and my curiosity was piqued.
“It seems to be a variation of the same illness. We also have a library with our records. Most of the Omegas are young and do not know our history.” He walked over to an intercom near the fireplace.
I didn’t even see it there.
“Please send a fourth-level Omega to the front sitting room. Princess Lucent of the Fae court the future Luna of Frostfire Pack is here and wishes to be shown the library and her quarters.” He stepped away and someone said they would be there soon.
I stood awkwardly looking out the window at the Northern Lights. It was beautiful here, even if the cold was seeping into my bones.
“If you will excuse me dear, I need to rest now. Thank you for easing my cough. These old bones couldn’t handle another night of coughing fits.” I curtseyed again and he stopped in the entryway.
That dark look was in his eyes and it seemed to bleed into the veins of his face. What was he dealing with? Tilting my head, I tried to use Fairy Sight on him but it wasn’t working how it should.
“I apologize for Cadence. He will issue you a formal apology tomorrow.” Sven left and I was making mental notes in my head. I needed a computer or paper and pens.
Maybe the Omega that was supposed to show me around could acquire the items for me.
A man walked in from outside and I was taken aback by how tall and muscular he was. He was wearing furs and I guess it was to keep him warm.
I walked over to him and smiled. “You must be the level four Omega that is supposed to show me around. I was wondering if you could also acquire a computer or maybe some notebooks and pens for me. I would like to make some notes on what I find in the library.”
He didn’t say anything and I was staring into his turquoise eyes, he had dark stubble on his face, and he also looked like I had insulted him in some way.
“Ummm sorry I am Lucent; I am the Fae Princess.” He looked even angrier and his jaw tensed. I wasn’t sure what it was that I was doing wrong.
“You don’t need someone escorting you around. The pack is busy. The library is down the hall to the right. It is the big room with all the books.” I narrowed my eyes at him. If I had done some faux pas I was sorry, but he didn’t have to act so condescendingly.
“Look if I have done something to insult you I apologize, that is why I wanted the items to take notes so I don’t insult anyone. This is all very new to me there is no need to be rude.” He moved in closer to me and he carried the scent of frosty pines and snow with him.
Leaning down into my face he was practically snarling at me. “YOU….DON’T….BELONG….HERE!”
Well, he made that abundantly clear, but I wasn’t about to let him push me around. I moved in closer to him and we were standing toe to toe. I had to crane my neck because he was so much taller than me.
“You are an ass! I didn’t ask to be here and frankly, if this is how I’m going to be treated I’d rather go back home and be ignored. Now just tell me where the hell my room is and I will find it on my own.” His eyes widened slightly.
Guess he wasn’t used to people talking back to him. I thought Omegas were the lowest wolves on the hierarchy.
“You are in the West wing the farthest from all of us. Go past the library and you will see a bear standing by double doors. Your suite is through those doors.” He growled at me and I snarled back at him. He pulled back as if I struck him.
“Thank you ever so much.” I curtseyed and resisted the urge to let my ire get the best of me. I followed his directions and found the library.
Peering in I smiled slightly, but that surly wolf, whomever he was ruined my mood. I wanted a bath and then I was going to bed.
I was now wondering who this Alpha Prince was and if he was just as arrogant as that Omega.
I hoped I never saw him again.
