"Give her some food, it will be of great help."Wanjiku said. "I hope that injection works."Nasieku said giving her daughter a worried look as she held her in her arms. "It will, no need to worry Nasieku, all she needs is some food and she will be better." Wanjiku assured her. Sainapei was having a fever that was getting bad on her. She could not stop crying which made Nasieku even more worried than she was already. Her baby was still young, only one year old. She was so afraid but suddenly Sainapei ate the food her mother was feeding her, and she became well. They both got relieved after seeing her healthy again. "How is she?" Sintoyia asked when she came back from fetching firewood in the forest, not that far from where they lived. "She's fine and actually more energetic this time."Wanjiku said smiling at Sainapei who was playing on the mattress with her dearest mother. They all were happy, just like one small family, bound by love and grace. Sainapei grew everyday to a beautiful and adorable girl who was nothing less her mother, photocopy. Being raised by three strong woman, would remain to be the most beautiful thing that would ever happen to her. Wanjiku taught her so many things and was surprised by how she was a first learner. She shared her school experiences, both good and bad. "Our teacher would give us presents when we passed our eams. " I would also love to go there one day and pass the exams." She said intelligently when she was only four years old. "You will my grandchild," Wanjiku said and gave her a kiss on her forehead. How she wished she would take her to school and even look for Nasieku and Sintoyia jobs so as to support their family. Sainapei was ever determined to know everything about her culture and much more. She asked so many questions, and so, no day passed without her learning something knew. "I've lived in this place for over twenty years now. I interacted with the maasai people and managed to learn their language and even much about their culture." Wanjiku said as they fetched firewood with her. Sainapei loved her, even though she knew they were not related, but the fact that they lived in her home, made them one family. Time went so fast and everyone was growing. Nasieku and Sintoyia had grown up to big responsible women while Wanjiku aged but remained strong. They had stayed there for six years now and Wanjiku never complained, not even once. She was actually happy too. Having a family she had never had for so many years, made her so greatful to God. One day when Sintoyia was playing with Sainapei outside, Nasieku went to Wanjiku and said, "Wanjiku, I'm so greatful for every help and support you've given my family since you found us. We count ourselves lucky to have you in our lives Wanjiku. Thank you." "No need for that, I'm actually the lucky one here, but the most important thing is that, we are all happy despite the painful memories that still haunt us."Wanjiku said smiling. "You are right, that's why I came to talk to him." "About what Nasieku?" "You know, we can't stay here forever. We have to move on with our lives and find something else to do." "I actually wanted to discuss the same with you, I'm glad you realized that. I'm also aging everyday and soon I will be no more in your lives and I can't leave you here. I want to take you to the City. There you will start a knew life with your family." "But where exactly in the city?" Wanjiku thought for sometime then said, "I know of a refugee camp somewhere. They are always ready to take anyone in need of help. By the way, they offer training on different skills to young men and women. Children like Sainapei will aso receive education. I think that's a better place, other than wandering in the streets." Thanks a lot Wanjiku.I owe you my whole life. I wonder what I can do to repay you back." "Just take care of yourself and your family." That evening, Nasieku explained everything to both Sintoyia and Sainapei. They both took it so maturely which made Wanjiku very happy. Two days later, they were ready to leave. Wanjiku lead them to a tarmac road that was about one kilometer from where they had been living. "This is the main road, it goes to the city." Wanjiku informed them as they stood there waiting for a vehicle to board. Several cars passed the somehow busy road and they got in one of them, a small minibus, and they finally began their journey to the city. Sainapei was as excited as never before, so was Nasieku and Sintoyia. Their lives were going to change very soon and all they hoped was that it would be for the better. Nasieku looked at Sainapei and sow how happy she was, and knew her dreams were slowly coming true. Her dreams of giving her child a better and happy life. " This is just the beginning." She thought.
