Chapter 2: The Monster’s Castle

1076 Words
Luna had never seen creatures like that before. They moved like wolves— but they weren’t wolves. Their bodies were twisted and unnatural, covered in black fur that seemed to absorb moonlight. Their claws dug into the earth like blades. Their glowing eyes burned with a sick crimson light. And every single one of them was staring at her. Not Kael. Not her father. Her. One of the creatures opened its mouth. Rows of jagged teeth gleamed in the darkness. Then it lunged. “LUNA!” Kael shifted instantly. Bones cracked. His massive black wolf exploded forward like a shadow, slamming into the creature midair. Blood sprayed across the forest. The beast screamed. Another attacked. Then another. Chaos erupted. Victor shouted orders to his hunters. “Kill them all!” Silver arrows filled the sky. Warriors screamed. Horses panicked. The forest became a battlefield. Luna stumbled backward, her heart pounding violently. She had no idea what was happening. Her father wanted Kael dead. These monsters wanted her alive. And Kael— Kael was protecting her. Why? A beast charged toward her through the smoke. Luna froze. Too fast. Too close. Its claws rose— Suddenly silver light burst from Luna’s body. BOOM. The creature was thrown across the forest and crashed into a tree. Everyone stopped. Even Kael. Even Victor. Luna stared at her glowing hands in horror. “What...what did I do?” One of Victor’s men whispered fearfully. “She awakened…” Victor’s face went pale. “No…” he muttered. Kael shifted back into human form, breathing heavily. He looked at Luna like he had just confirmed his worst fear. “We need to leave now.” Before Luna could react, Kael grabbed her waist. “What—” He pulled her against him. Then jumped off the cliff behind them. Luna screamed. Wind tore through her hair. They were falling. Then Kael shifted midair. His giant wolf form appeared again. He landed on a lower cliff with terrifying force before continuing to run through the mountains. Luna clung to his fur for dear life. Hours passed. The sky slowly turned gray. When Kael finally stopped, Luna nearly collapsed from exhaustion. They stood before enormous black gates built into a mountain. A castle. Cold. Massive. Terrifying. The gates slowly opened. Dozens of warriors immediately bowed. “Alpha.” Their eyes shifted toward Luna. Shock spread through the crowd. “That’s her?” “She’s human.” “She’s weak.” “She doesn’t even smell like a wolf.” Kael growled lowly. Silence instantly fell. He carried Luna inside the castle. Long black hallways stretched endlessly. Servants rushed out of their path. Everyone looked terrified of him. Luna struggled in his arms. “Put me down!” He ignored her. “Kael!” He finally placed her inside a luxurious bedroom. The moment her feet touched the floor, Luna slapped him. The sound echoed through the room. Every servant gasped. No one had ever touched Kael like that and lived. Kael slowly turned his face back toward her. His jaw tightened. Luna’s breathing shook violently. “You kidn*pped me!” “You would be dead if I didn’t.” “My father would never kill me!” Kael laughed bitterly. “That’s what you still believe?” Luna’s anger faltered. “What do you mean?” Kael walked toward the window. His broad shoulders looked tense. “When your power awakened tonight…” He turned toward her. “Your father looked afraid.” Luna shook her head. “You’re lying.” “Then ask yourself this—why did he hide the truth about your mother?” Her body stiffened. “You know where she is?” Kael went silent. That silence was answer enough. Luna rushed toward him. “Tell me!” He grabbed her wrists before she could hit him. “She’s alive.” Luna froze. The world stopped. “No…” “She’s imprisoned.” Tears instantly filled Luna’s eyes. “You’re lying.” “I wish I was.” “Where is she?” Kael hesitated. That terrified her more than anything. “Where?!” “The royal capital.” Luna’s knees gave out. Her mother was alive. For twelve years… alive. And no one told her. Her father lied. Her entire life was a lie. Kael caught her before she hit the floor. Luna weakly pushed him away. “Don’t touch me.” For once— he listened. That night Luna couldn’t sleep. Her mind replayed everything. Her father. The monsters. Her mother. Her strange power. And Kael calling her mate. Near midnight— a scream echoed through the castle. Luna sat upright. Then another scream followed. Then growling. Deep. Animalistic. Terrifying. Servants began running through the hallways. “It’s happening again!” “Lock the lower chambers!” “Don’t let him escape!” Luna opened her door. A maid tried stopping her. “Miss, please go back!” “What’s happening?” The maid looked terrified. “The Alpha…” Another deafening roar shook the castle. Luna ran toward the sound. Down endless stairs. Through underground tunnels. Until she reached massive iron doors. Through a small opening— she saw him. Kael. Chained to a stone wall. Half-shifted. Blood covering his body. His eyes glowing red. He was fighting dozens of warriors. Not to escape— but to stop himself. One warrior fell too close. Kael’s claws nearly tore him apart— but Kael stopped himself at the last second. He slammed his own body into the wall instead. Again. And again. And again. Bones cracked. Blood poured. Luna stared in horror. “What is he doing?” An older servant whispered behind her: “He does this every Blood Moon.” Luna slowly turned. “What?” “He chains himself before he loses control… because if he escapes…” The servant looked down. “He kills everyone.” Luna looked back at Kael. He lifted his head. Their eyes met through the bars. For a moment— the monster disappeared. All she saw was pain. “Leave,” Kael growled. Luna couldn’t move. “Leave NOW!” His chains began breaking. One snapped. Then another. The guards panicked. “We’re losing him!” Kael roared violently. His wolf fully emerged. Massive. Terrifying. Unstoppable. The final chain cracked. Everyone screamed. Kael’s red eyes locked onto Luna. And this time— he charged straight toward her.
