Chapter 6

1714 Words

A soft moan escaped my lips the second I pulled my eyes open. My skull throbbed in slow, agonizing waves, and my body felt as though every nerve ending had been frayed. Every muscle burned—a dull, radiating agony that pooled most violently in my legs. Memory returned in a sudden, brutal wave, and hot tears spilled instantly over my lashes. I couldn't fathom it. How could he break me like that? In all our years together, we had fought—we had snapped, we had hurled sharp words back and forth—but he had never laid a hand on me. Not once. He used to handle me like delicate glass, treating me like a princess he was terrified to shatter. Yesterday, he didn't just break the glass; he exploded like a dormant volcano, burning everything we built to ash. And for what? A hallucination of betrayal.
