The hunter’s jaw tightened. Finally he lowered his weapon. “For now,” he said. “But the Order will want answers.” He turned sharply. “Secure the wounded.” The hunters dispersed through the ruined village. Kael exhaled slowly. “That could’ve gone worse.” Aria gave him a dry look. “You call that good?” He gestured at the destroyed street. “Considering Vargan usually leaves piles of bodies? Yes.” She looked toward the forest. The dark trees stood silent again, as if nothing had happened. But Aria could still feel something watching. Waiting. Kael followed her gaze. “He’ll be back.” “I know.” “But that’s not the part that worries me.” She crossed her arms. “What does?” Kael hesitated. “I’ve heard stories… old ones. Before the Silver Order. Before the packs split apart.” Aria raised an eyebrow. “Let me guess. They involve glowing moon powers.” He didn’t smile. “They involve Moonborn.” The word sent a strange chill down her spine. “What’s that supposed to mean?” Kael looked at her carefully. “Legends say there were once humans chosen by the moon itself.” “Chosen for what?” “To control the balance between wolves and humans.” Aria blinked. “That sounds like a bedtime story.” “Maybe.” He nodded toward the barn Vargan had smashed through. “But I’ve never seen an Alpha thrown through a wall by light either.” Aria didn’t answer. Because deep inside her chest— The warmth flickered again. Faint. Alive. Kael noticed the way she stiffened.
