The Moonborn Truth

276 Words
The symbol in the dirt didn’t fade with the morning light. Aria stood at the forest edge long after the others had left, staring at the crescent moon carved into the earth. The claw marks were deep—too deep for an ordinary wolf. Vargan had wanted this message to last. MOONBORN. The word echoed in her mind. Behind her, Kael approached quietly. “You’re still here.” Aria crossed her arms. “Hard to walk away from something like that.” Kael studied the symbol again, his golden eyes uneasy. “I was hoping I’d never see that word again.” Aria turned to him sharply. “Meaning you’ve heard it before.” Kael hesitated. “Only in stories told to wolf pups. Old pack legends.” “Start talking.” He sighed and leaned against a tree. “Hundreds of years ago, before hunters and wolves were constantly at war, there were people called Moonborn. Humans, chosen by the moon’s power.” “Chosen how?” “No one knows exactly,” Kael said. “But they could channel lunar energy. Not like witches or magic users. Something… older.” Aria frowned. “And what did they do with it?” “They kept balance.” “Between wolves and humans?” Kael nodded. “When packs became too violent, the Moonborn could stop them. When hunters wiped out too many wolves, they stepped in there too.” Aria gestured toward the ruined village behind them. “Clearly they’re doing a great job.” Kael’s mouth twitched. “They vanished centuries ago.” Aria looked down at her hands. “Until now.”
