The Alpha's Warning

293 Words
The creature was larger than any wolf Aria had ever seen. Nearly twice Kael’s size. Muscles twisted beneath scarred fur, and its red eyes burned with something far more intelligent than a normal beast. The villagers backed away in terror. Even the Silver Order hunters hesitated. The Alpha’s voice rumbled out—deep and distorted, but unmistakably human. “I’ve been searching for you, Kael.” Kael stepped forward slowly. “What do you want, Vargan?” Aria’s eyes snapped to him. “You know this thing?” Kael didn’t look away from the Alpha. “Yes.” Vargan laughed, the sound echoing through the village. “Oh, she doesn’t know?” the Alpha mocked. “How unfortunate.” Aria’s grip tightened on her dagger. “Know what?” Kael’s voice was quiet. “…We used to run in the same pack.” The hunters gasped. Vargan’s grin widened. “But Kael betrayed us,” the Alpha continued. “Ran away to protect helpless humans.” Aria felt the weight of every eye in the village shift toward Kael. “You never mentioned that part,” she muttered. Kael didn’t answer. Vargan stepped closer, claws tearing grooves into the dirt. “Come back,” the Alpha said. “Join me again.” Kael shook his head. “No.” The Alpha’s smile vanished. “Then you die with them.” The ground trembled. Dozens of glowing eyes appeared at the edge of the forest. More wolves. An entire pack. Aria whispered, stunned: “…You’ve got to be kidding me.” Kael glanced at her. “Still planning to stay longer?” She spun her dagger once and smirked. “Oh, I’m definitely staying.” The wolves charged. And the battle for Blackridge began.
