CHAPTER 1: A LIFE UNRAVELED
Linda Thorne stepped into the upscale event planning agency, her heels echoing off the marble floor. The opulent showroom sparkled with elaborate decorations, each one carefully selected for her upcoming anniversary celebration with Nathan Russell.
As she examined the exquisite centerpieces, a young assistant approached her. “Mrs. Russell, what do you think of these crystal and orchid arrangements?” Linda’s fingers grazed the delicate petals. “Nathan will adore them. Let’s order twenty for the main dining area.”
With the order placed, Linda’s attention turned to her phone, which had buzzed with a call from her agent. She let it go to voicemail, focusing instead on perfecting every detail of her anniversary surprise.
The hours flew by in a whirlwind of decisions. Linda visited top luxury cake designers, sampling decadent chocolate ganaches and envisioning the perfect five-tier masterpiece. She pored over invitation designs, selecting a custom heavy cream cardstock with raised gold lettering.
At their favorite restaurant, Linda met with the head chef to book the rooftop and finalize the menu. As they discussed wine pairings, she noticed several missed calls from her agent. The chef’s concern was met with a wave of her hand. “It’s nothing, really. Tell me more about that lobster bisque Nathan loves.”
As the sun dipped below the horizon, Linda returned to their Gold Coast penthouse, her mind abuzz with plans and excitement. The elevator doors slid open, revealing their sleek living room, where the TV hummed softly.
“Nathan?” Linda called out, slipping off her shoes. “Are you home early, darling?” The penthouse remained silent, except for the TV. Linda rounded the corner, her heart sinking as she took in the entertainment news footage on screen.
Nathan, her Nathan, stood at the Metropolitan Museum’s charity gala, his arm wrapped around Gina Cho, the stunning supermodel. Linda’s eyes froze on the screen, her mind reeling as she watched Nathan and Gina pose for photos, their chemistry undeniable.
Time lost all meaning as Linda sat transfixed, her world crumbling around her. The setting sun, the twinkling city lights, and the soft whir of the elevator all faded into the background.
Nathan’s arrival broke the spell. Linda’s head jerked up, her eyes wild as she watched her husband stride into the room. His dark eyes met hers, cold and unyielding.
“Nathan,” Linda choked out, her voice trembling. “What’s going on?”
He turned to her, his expression unreadable. “I assume you’ve seen the news.”
Linda’s legs trembled as she stood. “Tell me this is some kind of mistake. A PR stunt. Anything”.
Nathan’s response was a slow pour of scotch into a glass. “It’s no mistake, Linda. Gina and I have an arrangement.”
Linda’s voice rose, hysteria edging in. “An arrangement? What the hell does that even mean?”.
Nathan’s words cut through the air like a knife. “I’ve decided to explore other options,” he said, his tone detached. “Your inability to provide an heir has left me no choice.”
Linda’s eyes widened in shock. “My inability?” she repeated, her voice trembling. “We’ve been trying for years, Nathan. We’ve seen specialists, done IVF… what more can I do?”
Nathan’s expression remained unyielding. “Nothing has worked, Linda. And I need a son to carry on the Russell legacy. Gina is young, fertile… she understands what’s required.”
Linda’s anger and heartbreak boiled over. “I’m your wife, Nathan!” she exclaimed. “We took vows, for better or worse. Remember?”
A cruel smile twisted Nathan’s lips. “Come now, darling. You’re an actress. You know that sometimes, the script changes. And we must adapt.”
Linda’s eyes flashed with danger. “If this is how you want to play it, fine. I’ll call my lawyer in the morning. Let’s see how the great Nathan Russell fares in a very public, very messy divorce.”
In an instant, Nathan’s demeanor shifted. He set down his glass and advanced on Linda, backing her against the wall. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you, my dear,” he whispered, his voice menacing.
Linda refused to be intimidated. “Why not?” she spat.
Nathan’s voice dropped to a whisper. “Because I will destroy you, Linda. Your acting career? Over. No one will touch you once I’m done. And your brother… certain evidence of his crimes could come to light. How long do you think he’d last in prison?”
Linda’s blood ran cold. “You wouldn’t,” she whispered.
Nathan’s eyes glittered with malice. “Try me.”

The next morning, Linda stood before the mirror in their master bathroom, carefully applying concealer to hide the dark circles beneath her eyes. Her hands shook as she fastened a string of pearls around her neck – a gift from Nathan on their first anniversary.
“Are you ready?” Nathan’s voice startled her. He stood in the doorway, impeccably dressed as always.
Linda met his gaze in the mirror. “Do I have a choice?”
His smile didn’t reach his eyes. “You always have a choice, my dear. But I trust you’ll make the right one.”
The drive to Salazar Express headquarters passed in tense silence. As they pulled up to the curb, Linda spotted Gina waiting for them. The supermodel’s lithe frame was poured into a revealing Versace dress, drawing admiring glances from passersby.
Nathan exited first, extending his hand to help Gina into the backseat. “Good morning, my dear. You look ravishing.”
Gina’s laugh tinkled like glass. “You’re too kind, Nathan. Linda, darling, how are you?”
Linda gritted her teeth, pasting on a smile as she slid over to make room. “Just wonderful, Gina. Lovely to see you.”
As they made their way inside, Gina’s hand kept finding its way to Nathan’s arm, his shoulder, the small of his back. Each touch felt like a dagger in Linda’s heart.
The press room buzzed with anticipation as they entered. Cameras flashed, capturing the trio’s entrance. Nathan guided them to the podium, positioning Linda on his left, Gina on his right.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Nathan began, his voice smooth and controlled. “Thank you for joining us this morning. We have an exciting announcement to share.”
Linda felt Gina’s fingers brush against Nathan’s back, hidden from the cameras. She clenched her fists, willing herself to maintain her composure.
Nathan continued, weaving a tale of modern love and unconventional arrangements. He spoke of strengthening family bonds and embracing new possibilities. With each word, Linda felt her world constricting, her heart breaking into a million pieces.
Nathan’s words hung in the air like a challenge. “As we move forward, we’re excited to share this new journey with all of you. Linda, Gina, and I are dedicated to proving that love can adapt, evolve, and flourish in the most unexpected ways.”
The room exploded into a frenzy of questions, each one a tiny dagger piercing Linda’s composure. She stood tall, her smile a masterful façade, as the flashbulbs popped around them like a thousand tiny suns.
A reporter’s voice cut through the din. “Mrs. Russell, how do you feel about this unconventional arrangement?”
Linda felt Nathan’s grip on her waist tighten, a subtle reminder to play her part. She leaned forward, her voice steady despite the turmoil brewing inside. “I’m honored to welcome Gina into our lives. Love, in all its forms, is a beautiful thing. And I’m excited to see where this new chapter takes us.”
The room erupted into another round of questions, each one a reminder that Linda’s life would never be the same. She stood frozen, her smile locked in place, as the world
around her continued to spin out of control.
