Unresolved emotions

Arjun arrived at the library, his heart pounding in his chest. The familiar scent of old books and polished wood filled the air, triggering memories he thought he had buried. He took a deep breath before walking in, his mind focused on the task at hand. He needed to find out what Maya knew, but he couldn’t ignore the swirl of emotions that seeing her again stirred within him. He spotted her almost immediately. She was behind the front desk, her hair pulled back in a loose bun, her eyes scanning the pages of a book. She looked just as he remembered, yet different. There was a vulnerability about her now that hadn’t been there before. “Maya,” he said softly, approaching her. Maya looked up, her eyes widening with a mixture of surprise and apprehension. “Arjun,” she whispered. “What are you doing here?” “I need to ask you some questions,” Arjun said, trying to keep his voice steady. “About the murder you witnessed.” Maya’s face paled. She set the book down, her hands trembling slightly. “I… I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Arjun frowned, leaning on the counter. “Maya, we have witnesses who saw you near the crime scene. You need to tell me what you saw.” Maya bit her lip, tears filling her eyes. “I didn’t mean to see anything. I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.” Arjun’s expression softened. He could see the fear in her eyes, but he needed her to cooperate. “Maya, please. We need your statement. You might have seen something crucial, even if you don’t realize it.” Maya looked down, her shoulders slumping in defeat. “Alright,” she said quietly. “I’ll come with you.” Arjun nodded, relieved. “Thank you. Let’s go.” The drive to the police station was silent, the tension between them palpable. Arjun glanced at Maya, who was staring out the window, her face a mask of anxiety. He wanted to comfort her, to tell her everything would be alright, but he knew better. Right now, they needed to focus on the case. When they arrived at the station, Arjun led Maya to an interrogation room. The small room was stark, with a single table and two chairs. Maya sat down, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. “Can I get you something? Water? Tea?” Arjun offered, trying to ease her nerves. Maya shook her head. “No, thank you.” Arjun sat down across from her, opening his notebook. “Alright, Maya. Can you tell me what happened last night?” Maya took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts. “I was walking home from the library. It was late, and the streets were empty. As I was passing the alley near my apartment, I heard voices. At first, I thought it was just a couple arguing, but then I heard a gunshot.” Arjun’s pen moved swiftly over the paper, capturing every word. “Did you see who fired the shot?” Maya shook her head. “No, I was too scared to look. I just ran. I didn’t want to get involved.” Arjun leaned forward, his gaze intense. “Did you see anyone else? Anything that stood out?” Maya hesitated, her brow furrowing in concentration. “There was a car parked nearby. A black sedan. I remember thinking it was odd because it had tinted windows, and I couldn’t see inside.” Arjun nodded, jotting down the detail. “Did you get a look at the license plate?” Maya shook her head again. “No, it was too dark.” Arjun sighed, closing his notebook. “Thank you, Maya. This helps a lot. We’ll look into the car.” Maya nodded, looking relieved but still on edge. “Arjun, do you think I’m in danger?” Arjun met her gaze, his expression serious. “I won’t lie to you, Maya. It’s possible. But we’ll do everything we can to keep you safe.” Maya’s eyes filled with tears. “Thank you, Arjun.” Arjun stood up, his resolve hardening. “I’ll walk you back home. We’ll assign an officer to keep an eye on your place, just in case.” As they walked back to the car, the streets seemed eerily quiet. Maya’s mind raced with everything that had happened, and she found herself stealing glances at Arjun. Despite the years and the bitterness of their last meeting, there was still a sense of security she felt in his presence. “Arjun,” she said hesitantly. “I’m sorry about how things ended between us.” Arjun looked at her, a mixture of emotions flickering in his eyes. “It’s in the past, Maya. Right now, we need to focus on the present.” Maya nodded, biting her lip. “I know. I just… I never got the chance to explain.” Arjun sighed, stopping in his tracks. “Maya, this isn’t the time or place. But we will talk, I promise. Once this is all over.” Maya felt a small measure of relief at his words, but the fear lingered. She climbed into the car, her mind a whirlwind of thoughts. Back at the station, Arjun reviewed Maya’s statement with his team. “We need to find that car. It’s our best lead right now.” Officer Singh nodded. “I’ll check the traffic cameras in the area. Maybe we’ll get lucky.” As they worked, Arjun couldn’t shake the feeling that they were missing something. He looked at Maya’s photograph on his desk, a sense of protectiveness washing over him. He wouldn’t let anything happen to her. Not again. Just then, his phone buzzed with a message from the unknown number: “You’re getting too close, Kapoor. Back off, or she’ll pay the price.” Arjun’s blood ran cold. He showed the message to Captain Mitchell, who frowned. “They’re watching us. We need to be careful.” Arjun nodded, his jaw set. “I won’t let them get to her.” As Arjun prepared to leave the station, Officer Singh rushed in, his face pale. “Inspector Kapoor, we found the car. It’s registered to a known associate of Eddie Brooks.” Arjun’s eyes narrowed. “Who?” Singh handed him the file. “Vikram Chauhan. He’s been on our radar for a while, but we never had enough to pin anything on him.” Arjun’s heart pounded. Vikram Chauhan was a dangerous man with connections that ran deep. If he was involved, this was bigger than they initially thought. As Arjun absorbed this information, his phone buzzed again. Another message from the unknown number: “Tick tock, Kapoor. Time is running out.” Arjun clenched his fists, a sense of urgency overtaking him. He had to act fast, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that they were already a step behind. The game was just beginning, and the stakes were higher than ever. Aa
