Chapter 3-A shadow in the spotlight

Alicia’s hands shook as she stared at the screen. “Scholarship Student from Uganda Accused of Cheating” Her stomach dropped. She had only just arrived, yet it felt like the entire campus was already against her. Outside the classroom, whispers buzzed like angry bees. “Did you see that post?” “That’s her, isn’t it?” “They’re saying she cheated…” Alicia gritted her teeth. I didn’t cheat. I worked hard for this. Park Min-ho quietly picked up the phone and scanned the post. His expression was unreadable, but the intensity in his eyes made Alicia uneasy. Kang Jae-hyun leaned casually against the wall, smiling in that infuriating way he always did. “You keep asking who posted it,” Jae-hyun said, “but the real question is… who would benefit if you lost the scholarship?” Alicia frowned. “Why would anyone care about me?” Jae-hyun’s smile faded. “Because, you see… someone wanted that scholarship. Badly. And they didn’t get it.” Alicia’s mind raced. “Who?” “Her,” Jae-hyun said simply, pointing toward the other end of the courtyard. Alicia’s eyes followed his finger. A tall girl in a pristine uniform glanced at her, lips pressed tight, her gaze sharp as a blade. Jae-hyun continued, “The daughter of the university chairman. She was expected to get this scholarship — not you.” Alicia’s heart pounded. “But… she’s rich. She doesn’t need the money.” “Exactly,” Jae-hyun said, his tone serious now. “It’s not the money she wants. It’s influence, prestige… the image of being the top student. And now you’re standing in her way.” Alicia felt the weight of it sink in. She had only just arrived, yet someone already saw her as a threat. From behind her, Min-ho’s calm voice cut through the tension. “The university won’t remove you without a fight. But enemies like her… they won’t stop.” Alicia turned to him. “So… what do I do?” Min-ho didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he studied her, his eyes piercing. “You survive. That’s all you can do… for now.” Alicia swallowed hard. The words sounded simple, but the truth behind them chilled her. Then Jae-hyun leaned closer, lowering his voice to a whisper. “Consider this your welcome to Seoul International University. The higher you climb, the more people will try to push you down. And tonight… someone is already planning their first move.” Alicia froze. “What do you mean?” Jae-hyun smirked faintly, then turned and disappeared into the crowd. Min-ho remained silent, but the look in his eyes told her something: tonight, nothing would be the same. And as Alicia walked back to her dorm, she couldn’t shake the feeling that the shadows around the campus had just grown… and they were waiting for her. Alicia tried to walk away, but her legs suddenly felt heavy. The whispers, the stares, the weight of being watched… it all became too much. Her vision blurred. Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes, and before she could stop herself, she broke into a run, heading for the nearest bathroom. Once inside, she locked the door and leaned against the wall, letting the tears fall freely. She felt the fear, the exhaustion, the pressure of being a newcomer in a world that seemed designed to push her down. “I… I can’t do this,” she whispered to herself, her shoulders shaking. Then a soft knock came at the door. It was Min ji a girl from her class “Alicia? Are you okay?” “I… I’m fine,How do you even know my name?" Alicia tried to say, but the words caught in her throat. Min-ji didn’t argue. She gently slid the door open and stepped inside. “You’re not alone,” she said softly. “I saw what happened. You don’t have to carry this by yourself.” Alicia sniffled, wiping at her tears. “I… I just feel so small here. Everyone’s against me already, and I don’t even know why…” Min-ji moved closer and handed her a tissue. “They’re not against you because you’re weak. They’re afraid of someone who’s strong enough to shake things up. That’s you. And you… will survive. You just need to remember that, okay?” Alicia took a shaky breath, clutching the tissue like it was a lifeline. “Thank you,” she whispered. Min-ji smiled warmly. “I’ll help however I can. Just… don’t let them see you cry.” Alicia nodded. For the first time since arriving in Korea, she felt a flicker of warmth amid the chaos. But outside the bathroom door, the whispers on campus weren’t going away. And Alicia knew, with a sinking feeling in her chest, that tonight, the real battle had only just begun.
