Chapter 7 — Lines Drawn

The plaza slowly emptied, but Alicia’s heart was still racing. Students were leaving in small groups, whispering excitedly about what had just happened. “Did you hear? She ranked first.” “So-yeon tried to frame her.” “This is going to spread everywhere.” Alicia stood still, trying to process everything. Only minutes ago, she had been seconds away from being publicly humiliated. Now the entire campus had watched Han So-yeon’s plan fall apart. Min-ji exhaled slowly beside her. “Well… that was insane.” Alicia laughed nervously. “I thought my life was over.” “You handled it well,” Min-ji said. But Alicia’s eyes had already moved toward someone else. Park Min-ho. He stood a few steps away, speaking quietly to a faculty assistant who had arrived near the screen. His posture was calm, but his expression remained serious. Alicia hesitated before walking toward him. Min-ji nudged her lightly. “Go.” Alicia approached slowly. “Min-ho,” she said. He turned to look at her. For a moment neither of them spoke. Then Alicia said the words she had been holding in. “Thank you.” Min-ho shook his head slightly. “You shouldn’t thank me.” “Why not?” “Because this situation shouldn’t have happened in the first place.” Alicia crossed her arms. “Well… it did.” Min-ho glanced toward the stairs where So-yeon had stood earlier. “She’s not used to losing.” “That’s obvious,” Alicia muttered. Min-ho studied Alicia carefully. “You’re not planning to back down, are you?” The question surprised her. “Should I?” “If you want peace here,” he said calmly, “that would be the easiest path.” Alicia thought about it. Then she shook her head. “No.” Min-ho’s eyes narrowed slightly. “I worked too hard to get here,” she continued. “I’m not leaving because someone rich doesn’t like me.” For the first time that night, Min-ho gave a faint smile. “Good.” Alicia blinked. “You agree?” “Yes.” “Why?” Min-ho didn’t answer right away. Instead he said something unexpected. “Because people like her shouldn’t always win.” Before Alicia could ask what he meant, another voice cut in. “Well, well.” Kang Jae-hyun appeared beside them, clapping slowly. “That was a very dramatic night.” Alicia rolled her eyes. “You enjoyed that way too much.” “Of course,” he said. “Campus life was getting boring.” Min-ho looked annoyed. “You could have helped earlier.” Jae-hyun shrugged. “Where’s the fun in that?” Min-ji walked over, shaking her head. “You’re unbelievable.” Jae-hyun grinned. “Yet you’re all still talking to me.” Alicia couldn’t help laughing slightly. The tension from earlier was slowly fading. But across the plaza, someone else was watching. Han So-yeon stood near the entrance of the administration building. Two girls stood beside her, whispering angrily. “This shouldn’t have happened,” one of them said. “He embarrassed you in front of everyone.” So-yeon remained silent. Her expression was calm again. But her eyes were cold. “She embarrassed herself,” So-yeon replied quietly. “But—” “It doesn’t matter.” Her gaze shifted toward Alicia. Standing with Min-ho. Laughing slightly. So-yeon’s fingers tightened around her phone. “This was only the first move.” Her friend frowned. “What are you going to do?” So-yeon smiled faintly. “This time I attacked her reputation.” Her eyes darkened. “Next time… I’ll attack something she actually cares about.”Back in the plaza, Alicia suddenly shivered. Min-ji noticed. “You okay?” “Yeah,” Alicia said slowly. “I just feel like…” “Like someone is still watching you?” Jae-hyun finished. Alicia looked at him. “Yes.” Jae-hyun smiled faintly. “That feeling is probably correct.” Min-ho looked toward the administration building. But So-yeon had already disappeared inside. “She won’t stop,” he said quietly. Alicia took a deep breath. “I know.” Then she surprised even herself with her next words. “But neither will I.” Min-ho looked at her again. And for a brief moment, something changed in his expression. Respect. Later that night, Alicia returned to her dorm room. Min-ji dropped onto her chair dramatically. “I need snacks after that emotional rollercoaster.” Alicia laughed. But when she checked her phone again, she froze. Another message had arrived from the same unknown number. Her stomach tightened. She opened it slowly. The message read: Unknown: You survived tonight. Alicia’s fingers trembled. Then a second message appeared. But next time… I might not be able to help you. Alicia’s heart started pounding again. Min-ji looked over. “What happened?” Alicia slowly turned the phone toward her. Min-ji read the message. Then she whispered: “Whoever this is… they know something.” Alicia stared at the screen. And a new thought suddenly formed in her mind. What if the person warning her… was actually someone very close to the enemy?
