Jordan was only a few steps away, leaning against the opposite counter, watching me with that quiet, unrelenting focus that always made my skin feel too tight. We had come back here after the office, after the breakdown in the meeting room, after he had held me through every tear without once trying to make it stop. The memory of his arms around me, steady and warm, still lingered on my skin like a brand I couldn’t scrub off. But now the daylight had shifted, turning softer, later, and reality was creeping back in through the windows like smoke. This was getting too deep.
