CHAPTER FORTY FIVE When Riley got home from the service, she was hoping for a quiet afternoon. But to her surprise, Liam was sitting in the family room with April and Jilly. They were all looking glum. “What’s the matter here?” Riley asked. April said, “Liam’s father kicked him out. He’s got nowhere else to go.” April and Jilly looked at Riley with expressions of silent appeal. Riley knew what her daughters were asking with those looks. They wanted to know—could Liam stay here with them, at least for a while? Riley resisted the impulse to simply say no outright.
