“You do exist.” I whisper, and the wolf’s pale blue eyes search my own quizzically. I can’t explain it, but I feel safe with this wolf. As we look into each other’s eyes, I just know he will never harm me. His ears perk up and look into the distance behind me. I look too, but I don’t see the man. That doesn’t mean he isn’t there though. “Quick, you have to run! He will probably catch or kill you!” I try to shoo and shove the massive wolf. He doesn’t budge, his eyes fixated on the area I just came from. Tears begin to fall down my cheeks as I try to push the beautiful grey wolf out of the clearing.
I hear the click, and I know it’s too late. I turn around and try to shield the beast with my body. The wolf emits a loud growl and tries to throw me to the side. I feel something hit me though. Many somethings. When I land with a thud in the snow, blood has speckled and pooled in various areas near me. I hear a whine and look up at the wolf who also has red speckling his thick coat. I choke out a cry as I worry about how badly he may be injured, wincing as I try to move in for a closer look.
“I’m so sorry,” I whisper to him. “I tried. If you can still move though, you need to go!” I urge as my throat constricts. The wolf howls, deeper and louder than any howl I am familiar with. I hear the loading of another shotgun slug.
“You led me right to one!” I hear him call out with some sick kind of joy. “Now I can kill you, and take him.” He goes quiet again, and then I hear the c**k of his gun. I move to my feet, nearly falling back down, as I fall into the wolf.
“Please! Please get yourself to safety!” I cry as I try pushing him again. I know my fate is sealed. I won’t be getting away. But maybe I could save this gorgeous creature. If only he would run!
“Shit.” I hear the man, not knowing why he is the one cursing right now. I brace myself, waiting for another gun shot. Instead, I hear a different click and a small crunch as something small but heavy lands near us.
The wolf throws me down again and leaps on top of me. A small explosion going off and a weird gas filling the air. The smell is strange, almost herbal. It stings my throat a little, but otherwise I don’t feel anything too strange. Well, except that there isn’t a wolf on top of me. There’s a man. A full grown, buck naked man. I let out a small scream before he covers my mouth with his rough hand.
“Just, hang on,” he wheezes as he tries to roll off me. I see him look up, panic morphing his features. “No, wait!” Is the last thing I hear before I feel a hard pinch in my neck, and all goes dark.
…
My head feels like it is full of cotton, as does my mouth. Is this like an extreme hangover? I need water. And, is that my alarm? A constant beeping sound keeps going and going. I have never set my alarm to sound like that as it would remind me of waking up in a… hospital! I’m in the hospital! I hear the beeping accelerate, and then a door open. I still haven’t opened my eyes. I don’t want to accept this reality yet.
“Please calm down. You are alright. My name is Dr. Knix, you are in my care now.” I hear a gentle man’s voice trying to soothe my nerves.
Is he a good doctor or a bad doctor? Did that man get me and this is the doctor they have looking after their trafficked people. Oh lord, am I being trafficked? The monitor sounds as though it is beeping faster than before, my heart trying to pump right out of my body. This all had to be some sick nightmare.
“Delta, perhaps you can soothe her?” Dr. Knix suggests to someone he calls Delta. Is that a real name or some code?
“Hey Tiny, you’re okay.” Delta, whoever he is, is now on my other side. The back of his hand on my cheek. Something about the action and this person is soothing me. Is it hypnosis? Oh lord, I sound crazy. But his voice… His voice sounds vaguely familiar, but not like the bad man’s gruff voice. “Can you open your eyes for us now?” He asks in a soft tone that just adds to the calming of my nerves.
