Chapter 7 - Avery

1092 Words
A couple of knocks on the door interrupt our conversation, and Wendy jumps straight out of her chair. I giggle as the chair falls over and in walks Dr. Knix. Wendy throws me a look of mock betrayal, and I just laugh harder. “Well, I can see we are in high spirits today.” Dr. Knix walks over and looks over my chart. “Good work, Wendy. Just as always. But, these are time-stamped nearly an hour ago.” He raises an eyebrow at her, and her whole face turns the color of cherries. “My fault! I was feeling lonely and curious,” I shrug, winking at Wendy. “Wendy has been extremely kind in keeping me company in a place where I only know my doctor and the Delta, and neither that well,” I continue as I hold Dr. Knix’s gaze. He studies my face for a moment before chuckling. “You are going to be most interesting to have around Frost Moon, Miss Libita.” “Please, just call me Avery.” I smile warmly up at him. “Ah, well then, as soon as you are no longer my patient, please call me Charles.” I nod in agreement. Feeling better every moment I am here. “Wendy, we have Gina here for her check-up. Will you get the ultrasound ready?” “Yes, Dr. Knix,” Wendy squeaks before scampering out. “It was nice meeting you Avery!” She calls out behind her before disappearing out the door. Dr. Knix chuckles after her. “She is going to be a great pack doctor one day. Until then,” he turns his gaze back on me, “Maybe you can get her to do something fun on some evenings while you are in Frost Moon. It would be good for her, and you two seem to be getting along?” His tone is so paternal toward Wendy, and it fills my heart to know she has such a great mentor. My nodding yes seems to make his smile even brighter. “Very good. Now,” he glances down at my chart again. “Avery, you are healing nicely. I would like to release you with a prescription of antibiotics to take daily, and light pain killers to take only as needed. The Delta has informed me you will be staying in the packhouse, which, all things considered, is the best option. However,” he stares intensely down at me, and it makes me feel like a small child again, “no strenuous activity for at least a week. I want to see you again in three days to see how you are healing. If you feel the need to see me before then, please do. Do not wait if anything feels unusual or if any of your stitches open.” “Okay Dr. Knix. I promise.” I mean it too. I’m in an unfamiliar land that seems to have their own governing body where the majority of them are werewolves. I will be taking absolutely no chances. “Does that mean I’m free to go?” Dr. Knix grins down at me. “Yes, that is what that means. Bastan is waiting in the waiting room so that you can get changed.” He motions to a bag by the door. “Your clothes… well, they brought you some new ones. Wendy did the size checking and shopping, so do not worry.” He holds a hand up with a chuckle, clearly reading the mortification at the thought that Bastan picked out clean undergarments for me. “Thank you for everything Dr. Knix.” “You have been released from my care, Avery. Please, call me Charles.” I grin and nod as he takes his leave. I take my time getting ready, my wounds keeping me from moving too quickly anyway. Wendy has great taste in clothes, and the bra she got hooks in the front, making injured life so much easier. I do notice a couple of stitches done on my face, and wince at the idea of having to explain how I received those scars. I finish getting dressed, trying not to worry about all that now. I walk out in fleece-lined black leggings, a cream knit sweater, and an army green coat. Wendy even found some fleece-lined boots that lace halfway up my shins, perfect for the snow. I clear my throat when I see Bastan furiously typing on his phone in the waiting room. He jumps up and rushes over. “Tiny! Look at you out of bed and dressed to impress!” He grabs my hand and begins to gently lead me away. I look over my shoulder and see Wendy staring at our entwined hands. I giggle and wave to her. “Bye Wendy! Thanks for the clothes! I’ll get them back to you as soon as I can.” “Girl, please. We bought those for you!” It’s her turn to laugh as I let out an audible gasp. I turn my attention to Bastan, who just shrugs. “Your old clothes were a mess, and you are going to be here a while.” I stop before we are out the door, and I can feel him looking at me with concern. Before he has a chance to ask, I run back to Wendy. I wrap my good arm around her in a hug before pulling back. “Well, then it sounds like I will need a shopping buddy real soon, and Bastan has no sense of style.” I hear him make a sound of fake offense behind me, and I just giggle. “So, clear a day soon so that we can go shopping. I will tell Dr. Knix it’s for my mental health if need be.” I hear a familiar chuckle coming from around the corner, right before Dr. Knix appears. “Well, if it is for your mental health, how can I say no?” Wendy beams up at him and then back at me. “Wendy, how about tomorrow? That way, our patient is feeling nice and healthy for her return appointment.” “Oh, yes! That sounds wonderful! I need some new things anyway. I haven’t been shopping in ages!” Dr. Knix mouths thank you over Wendy’s shoulder, and I wink back at him. Bastan comes back up to me and starts leading me out of the clinic again. Everyone’s mood lifted for their own reasons.
