Kaitie woke up to find herself alone in bed. As she stretched, she heard Jake's voice coming from the kitchen. Kaitie grinned as she got out of bed and put on her robe, tying it at her waist. She covered her mouth when she reached the kitchen doorway to avoid disturbing what was happening.
Jake had moved a chair from the dining room table into the kitchen. Freckles was sitting on it, helping him prepare breakfast. Jake was talking to the cat, explaining everything he was doing as he cooked. The cat, in turn, was giving responsive meows and trills. Kaitie did not know if Freckles was responding to what Jake was saying or to the tidbits of ham and other morsels he was being given. Regardless of the reason, it was adorable and showed how loving Jake was to everyone.
“You snuck out of bed,”
