The door slammed open.

—Do you realize someone else could have walked in?!
—Sophie, your parents and your brother are downstairs!
—Not to mention the Halls just asked me about you!
—What?!
—Yes, Rebecca just asked about you. It’s obvious someone saw us come upstairs earlier. She asked why you hadn’t come down with me.
—I told her you were upstairs and that no one said we had to go down together… but she made it clear it’s not appropriate for you two to be alone here.
—Do you realize what could have happened if someone else had walked in instead of me?
We didn’t know what to say.
Just the thought of someone else walking in and seeing us made my stomach twist.
—I’m sorry… to both of you —Stephan said.
—I’m not trying to stop whatever this is —Camille said, pointing between us—, but we need rules.
For… whatever this is.
We looked at her, almost hopeful.
As if maybe… this could be real.
We said nothing else and went downstairs so my mother and Rebecca could see me.
Deep down, I knew exactly what they were worried about.
And honestly…
They weren’t wrong.
They immediately started bombarding me with absurd questions about Elijah.
Had I received his gifts?
Was I in contact with him?
Did I know if he would be coming for the holidays?
Blah, blah, blah.
Meaningless noise.
These women knew perfectly well he didn’t even bother to call me… and yet they expected me to have answers about him.

How ridiculous.
Deep down, this was all just a façade so the rest of the world would believe he was a devoted fiancé… that we had a strong connection.

Because he’s done nothing but humiliate me while studying abroad… clearly enjoying himself without a care.
Meanwhile, Elliot…
He’s been busy building something of his own.
Elijah should learn from his brother.
