Chapter 6: The Rules Begin to Break

1007 Words
Morning came too quickly. Or maybe I just didn’t sleep enough to notice it passing. Either way, I woke up with a heavy feeling in my chest—the kind that doesn’t come from exhaustion, but from knowing something has already gone wrong… and you’re just waiting for it to explode. Clara knew. That thought kept repeating in my head like a broken record. And Ethan’s words from last night— We adjust. I didn’t know what that meant yet. But I was about to find out. --- When I stepped into the kitchen, Ethan was already there. Fully dressed. As always. Perfect. Controlled. Untouchable. Except today… something was different. He didn’t look at me immediately. That alone made my stomach tighten. “You’re up early,” I said softly. “I didn’t sleep,” he replied. Honest. Rare. I paused. “Because of last night?” His eyes finally met mine. “Yes.” Silence. It wasn’t awkward. It was heavy. Like something unspoken was sitting between us now, refusing to leave. I cleared my throat. “What did Clara say to you… before she left?” For a second, he didn’t answer. Then he reached for his coffee. “She warned me,” he said simply. My heart tightened. “About what?” His gaze stayed on the cup. “About what she intends to do with what she knows.” My throat went dry. “So she is going to expose us?” He finally looked at me. “I didn’t say that,” he said. “But she’s not backing off.” My fingers curled slightly at my side. “Then what do we do?” I asked again. A pause. Then he said something I didn’t expect. “You move in properly.” I blinked. “What?” He repeated it, calmer this time. “No more hiding. No more sneaking. You stay here openly.” My heart skipped. “That’s not a solution,” I said quickly. “That’s the exact thing we were avoiding.” “It reduces suspicion,” he replied. “It increases it!” I shot back. Silence. For a moment, neither of us spoke. Then his voice dropped slightly. “You’re scared.” Again. That word. I exhaled sharply. “This isn’t about fear. It’s about consequences.” “And you think hiding is safer?” “Yes,” I said firmly. “Because once people start asking questions, we lose control.” His eyes narrowed slightly. “We never had control,” he said quietly. That hit harder than I expected. --- Later that morning, I arrived at the office alone. But it didn’t feel like I was alone. It felt like everyone was watching me. Or maybe it was paranoia. Either way, I couldn’t shake it. Clara wasn’t at her desk. That made things worse. Because silence from someone like her was never peace. It was preparation. --- By midday, Ethan called me into his office. When I walked in, he was standing by the window again. Like always. But this time, the atmosphere felt different. Tense. Waiting. “You’ve been avoiding eye contact with everyone,” he said without turning around. “I’m focusing on work,” I replied carefully. He turned slightly. “That’s not all.” I sighed. “Ethan—” I stopped myself. We weren’t supposed to use names. But somehow, it slipped out more easily now. He noticed. Of course he did. His gaze sharpened slightly. “You’re slipping,” he said. My chest tightened. “No, I’m not.” “Yes, you are,” he replied calmly. “And so am I.” That made me look up. “What does that mean?” He finally turned fully to face me. And for the first time… He looked conflicted. “I received a message this morning,” he said. My stomach dropped. “From Clara?” He shook his head. “No. From the board.” My breath caught. That was worse. Much worse. “What did it say?” His eyes held mine. “They’ve been informed of a potential misconduct within the company.” My mind went blank for a second. “No…” I whispered. He didn’t confirm it. But he didn’t deny it either. “They’re investigating,” he continued. “Quietly. For now.” My hands felt cold. “So it’s already spreading…” “Yes.” Silence. Thick. Heavy. Unavoidable. --- “What do we do now?” I asked again, but this time my voice wasn’t steady. Ethan stepped closer. Not slowly this time. Purposefully. “We stop reacting,” he said. I frowned. “That’s not an answer.” “It is,” he said firmly. “Because every reaction we make gives them more to see.” I shook my head. “So we just wait until we’re exposed?” His eyes darkened slightly. “No,” he said. “We control what they see.” Something in his tone shifted. Sharper. Stronger. Like a decision had already been made. “And how do we do that?” I asked cautiously. He paused. Then said the words that made my heart stop for the second time that day. “We confirm a version of the truth before they create their own.” I blinked. “What does that mean?” His gaze locked onto mine. “It means,” he said slowly, “we stop pretending there is nothing between us.” My breath caught. The room went silent. Too silent. My heart started beating faster. “Ethan…” I whispered, unsure what I was even about to say. But he didn’t let me finish. “Not as employees,” he added quietly. “Not anymore.” My entire body froze. Because in that moment… I realized something terrifying. Clara hadn’t just discovered our secret. She had forced it closer to becoming real. And Ethan Blackwood— was no longer trying to protect distance. He was closing it.
