Oh boy, werewolf knowledge was a lot. There’s so many things I had no idea about, it’s literally a whole different world. I sucked on the straw to my strawberry banana smoothie as Jackson told me everything. “So obviously you can turn into a wolf.” He started as he chewed on some curly fries. “Obviously.” I mocked him with a smirk. “You can shift whenever you want, it’s not controlled by the moon or whatever.” He emphasized his point by shaking around a fry. “Our existence is a secret to humans.” He said firmly and quietly. “Now there’s the dynamics of werewolves. We have an alpha and a luna, think of them as king and queen. Then we have betas and gammas. Every pack has one beta and one gamma. The beta is like a general or whatever, basically the strongest warrior. Gamma is the same thing, but they’re the luna’s personal bodyguard.” I nodded adamantly as I listened to him. “Then you have omegas, those are just regular wolves like me and you.” He shrugged nonchalantly. “Alpha’s, beta’s, and gamma’s are born into their titles or they can challenge the current wolf holding that title.” “And what about lunas?” I asked as I slurped more of my smoothie. “Lunas are chosen by their alpha or the Moon Goddess.” “The Moon Goddess?” My head c****d to the side as I gazed at him. “Werewolves worship a goddess that we call the Moon Goddess or also known as the Goddess Selene.” “Kinda like how humans worship God?” I lifted my spoon and dipped it into my smoothie to get a chunk of banana to pop into my mouth. “Yes, but just a little different. The Goddess also blesses all of her children with a mate.” My eyes widened. “Like a soul mate?” I asked quietly. “Mhm, they’re supposed to be your perfect match.” He mumbled as he took a bite of his burger. “Do you, um, have a mate?” I asked as I gazed into my smoothie. “Wolves can’t sense their mate until they’re twenty years old and even then it might take a few years to find them. I’m only eighteen, so I have a few years.” “How do you know when you’ve found your mate?” Thoughts of my mate swirled in my mind, what if my mate was Jackson? I looked him over, taking in his golden hair and deep blue eyes. He was handsome, but for some reason when I pictured my mate I imagined dark hair and green eyes. “I don’t really know how to explain it because I’ve never felt it before. From what other people have told me it’s like the whole world stops and all you can see is that person, they’re all that matters.” I sighed as I listened to Jackson talk, his voice was so beautiful and he looked so happy talking about being a wolf. “I still can’t believe all of this, it feels like any second I’m going to wake up and this will all be a dream.” I twirled my spoon in my smoothie. “Believe it, babe.” My heart stopped, my eyes snapped up to look at him, but he was back to eating. Did he really just call me babe? My heart fluttered in my chest and a blush spread across my cheeks. “Here’s your bill whenever y’all are ready.” Our waitress said as she laid down a receipt. “Oh here you go.” I spoke up, quickly grabbing my card out of my wallet. “You don’t have to pay.” Jackson said as he reached for the receipt. “Please, just think of it as a thank you.” I smiled at him and he simply nodded. “I’ll be right back with your card.” The waitress said as she hurried off. As I watched her walk away I caught a glimpse of the time. “Shit.” I mumbled. “What’s wrong?” Jackson asked with his head c****d to the side. “Well this is kind of embarrassing, but I have a curfew and I missed it. I won’t be able to be let into my house until six AM and it’s currently two fifteen AM.” I ran a hand down my face in exhaustion. “You could stay with me.” Jackson said, simply causing my head to snap up. “I-I don’t know.” I blushed at the thought of being alone with Jackson at his house. “It’s no big deal and then in the morning I can drive you home.” He shrugged nonchalantly. “Okay.” I smiled shyly. “I think before I take you home tomorrow you should see the pack doctor, she could go over more stuff with you and make sure you’re healthy.” I nodded in agreement. “Sounds like a plan.” I smiled at him. After the bill was paid we made our way into the woods, once again shifting into our wolves. By the time we reached Jackson’s apartment I was exhausted. “Here, I thought you might want something more comfortable to sleep in.” Jackson blushed as he held out some clothes for me. “Thank you, Jackson.” I smiled, taking the offered clothes. “There’s a spare bedroom, first door on the right and the bathroom is right across from it. You’re more than welcome to take a shower.” I smiled, telling him thank you again and headed for the shower. I felt dirty and sweaty with all the running we did, so I was grateful for the shower. I blushed when I realized what clothes he’d given me. It was an oversized tshirt and a pair of boxers. I inhaled deeply, they smelled just like his garden scent. When I came out of the bathroom I found Jackson sitting on the couch in the living room. When he looked up I swear I saw desire in his eyes. I felt my face flame at the idea of him liking me that way. He stood slowly, crossing the room to stand before me. I tried my hardest to calm my racing heart, but it was no use. “I like the way you look in my clothes.” He smiled, twirling a piece of my wet, blonde hair. “I think I like wearing your clothes.” Oh my god I did not just say that! “Oh really, what else do you like, Kayley?” Jackson smirked, stepping closer, our chests almost touching. “You know I-I kinda tired.” I chuckled awkwardly and stepped away from his warmth. “The guest room has a futon, I’m sorry if it’s not comfortable.” He said, leading me to the door. “It’s fine, I’ll see you in the morning.” “Goodnight, Kayley.” He said, raking his eyes over my body. “Goodnight, Jackson.” I squeaked before rushing into the guest room. Jackson and I woke up around eight in the morning. He insisted on making me pancakes and scrambled eggs. I didn’t want to tell him, but I’m more of a waffle kind of girl. We ate in comfortable silence and once we finished he walked me to a small clinic. We were in what he called his pack, Dark Rivers pack is their name. I learned yesterday that it's kind of a big community for wolves and there’s hundreds of them across America. There’s a small neighborhood of houses and a giant park. There’s Jackson’s apartment complex next to the neighborhood. Then a short walk down the sidewalk there’s what appears to be a small shopping center. At the very end there’s a large building labeled ‘Dark Rivers Clinic’. Once we stepped inside the receptionist helped me set up an appointment with one of the pack doctors. After waiting for forty five minutes I was led back to an examination room. I was worried about the cost, but they assured me that the clinic was totally free. Jackson explained that one of the pack’s many businesses helps pay for the cost. I sat up straight on the exam table when I heard a knock at the door. “Hello Miss Benson, I’m Dr. Lorenzo and I’ll be taking care of you today. I hear that you’ve just recently discovered you’re a wolf?” She was a tall woman with a dark, rich skin tone and kinky curly hair. “Yes, yesterday was my first shift.” I smiled shyly. “Well then I’m going to do a full exam and explain some things along the way.” I nodded to let her know I was paying attention. “How are your menstrual cycles?” She asked, sitting down at the computer, hands paused, ready to type. “Well they’ve always been irregular, I only have my period twice a year.” She nodded and began typing. “That’s common for wolves. Female wolves experience heats that happen the week after your period has ended. They can be quite uncomfortable and during that time is typically the only time a wolf can conceive. Your body will become extremely warm and you’ll experience the overwhelming urge to procreate.” My eyes were as wide as saucers. “I’ve never had that happen to me.” I stumbled over my words. “You won’t experience your first heat until after you turn twenty years old, that’s when wolves reach full maturity. We also have birth control that stops heats thank to modern science that you can start right away.” The doctor’s appointment went smoothly as Dr. Lorenzo explained more things about being a wolf. It felt nice, something about her made me feel comfortable and safe. After the visit was finished I met Jackson in the waiting area. “Thank you for all your help Jackson, I better head back home now.” I let out a small sigh, wishing I could spend more time with him. “Let me drive you, it’s the least I could do.” I nodded, accepting his offer and followed him back to his apartment.
