A giggle bubbled out of my lips, but it quickly died out at the sight of his firm expression.
“I’m sorry, what?” I stared at him dumb founded.
“When’s your eighteenth birthday?” He asked, totally brushing over what he previously said.
“In two weeks, why?” I asked wearily.
“Because when midnight hits on the day of your birthday, you’re going to transform into a wolf.” There was silence as we just stared at each other.
“Well, ahem, I think I’m gonna head home now.” I said, standing awkwardly, clutching my water bottle.
“Kayley, I don’t want you to be alone when it happens.” Hunter rounded the desk to stand before me.
“Look, I don’t know what you’re talking about, but I need to leave.” I stepped away from him cautiously. He put his hands up in surrender.
“I understand that you might be frightened, but I’m going to give you an address. Would you consider coming to see me on your birthday?” I chewed this inside of my cheek, he was kind of freaking me out.
“I-I’ll consider it, sure.” I said, just trying to appease him.
“Great.” He turned and scrawled something on a sticky note. I took it from him when he handed it to me.
“Thank you.” With that I scurried out of his office, trying to put as much distance as I could between us.
HUNTER POV
I ran a hand down my face as I watched her practically run from my office. I could have handled that ten times better than what I did. How else is someone supposed to react when you tell them they’re a wolf? Goddess, she probably thinks I’m insane. I inhaled deeply, her scent slightly making my brain fuzzy. I wonder what perfume she was wearing, she smelled like strawberries and vanilla. I pulled out my phone and hit the call button on the one person that I can rely on the most.
“Sup bro?” Denny’s cheery voice answered after the first ring.
“I need you to do some detective s**t for me.” I said, cutting straight to the point.
“What ya got for me?” He asked, a playfulness in his voice laced with seriousness.
“It’s a girl, Kayley Benson, seventeen, lives downtown. I need everything you can get on her.”
“Got it, boss man.”
“Thanks.” I said and ended the call. Denny has been my best friend since before I could talk. Both of our moms were pregnant together, I’m barely a month older than him. He is my rock and my future Beta when I take my position as Alpha of my pack, Dark Rivers. I have a few years before I become Alpha, I have to find my mate first and wolves don’t feel the mate bond until after twenty years old. So right now at the age of eighteen I’m taking care of one of our many businesses. I tried to get back to work, but my thoughts kept circling back to Kayley. Her big brown eyes and golden hair that framed her face. She was truly beautiful. I nearly jumped out of my skin when my phone rang.
“What did you find out?”
“There’s not much to know other than what you told me. She was put in the foster care system at birth. She bounced around in a few homes until she hit fifteen when she was put in the group home.” Denny said.
“Hm.” I hummed in response.
“There is something else.”
“What is it?” I asked impatiently.
“She’s going to age out of the group home when she turns eighteen, she’ll be homeless.” That’s why she wanted the job so badly.
“Okay, thanks Denny.”
“No problem.” I ended the call. I dialed Greta’s number while I was still holding my phone.
“Yes Mr. Wilde?” Greta’s monotone voice filled my ears.
“I want you to hire Kayley Benson.”
“But sir-”
“It’s not up for discussion, I wanted you to call her and tell her to be here tomorrow at eight AM sharp.” I hung up the phone before she could respond. I leaned back in my chair and gazed out the window that overlooked the city. All I could think about was curious brown eyes, honey colored hair, and the smell of strawberries and vanilla. I felt this indescribable urge to protect her and take care of her. I think it’s because she’s never been in a pack before. The thought of her having her first shift alone and scared twists something in my gut. Pulling out my cellphone I texted our head Omega, Janis, to prepare a room for Kayley. I didn’t give her many details, just told her to prepare a room on my floor for a guest. Since Kayley is going to age out of her group home soon, I want to make sure she has somewhere to go.
KAYLEY POV
I nibbled at my lip as I mulled over what Hunter said to me, it’s crazy, isn’t it?
“Hey Kayley!” Beatrice, one of the girls in my group home, greeted me as I came in through the front door.
“Hey Bea!” I smiled down at her as I ruffled her brown hair that was chopped into a pixie cut. She was tiny for someone that just turned sixteen last week.
“How was the job interview?” She asked, smiling up at me, her big green eyes full of affection. Bea and I came to the group home around the same time. We’ve been here the longest and quickly became close friends.
“Hey Kayley, there’s a phone call for you!” I heard Daniella call from the kitchen where our old school home phone was.
“One sec.” I told Bea as I walked into the kitchen to take the phone from Daniella.
“Hello, this is Kayley Benson.” I said politely, wondering who would be calling me.
“Hello Ms. Benson, this is Greta, we met earlier.” My brows furrowed, why is she calling me?
“Yes, how may I help you?”
“I’m calling you to offer you the job.” I felt my mouth pop open at her words.”
“But I-”
“You are expected to be here tomorrow morning, eight AM sharp.” She spoke, cutting me off.
“Yes ma’am.” I barely got the words out before the line went dead. I looked over to see Bea staring at me with her head c****d to the side.
“I got the job.” I chuckled softly as I placed the phone back on the wall. Bea clapped her hands and jumped up and down.
“Yay! This calls for a celebration!” She skipped over to the refrigerator and started pulling out vanilla ice cream and two cans of root beer.
“You know me so well.” We giggled as she scooped a large helping of ice cream into two bowls.
Once I got to the giant office building it was easier to navigate. I stepped out of the elevator at exactly eight o’clock and came face to face with Greta. She glanced from her wrist watch to me and let out a little huff.
“Follow me.” She spun on her heels and headed towards her office. Once inside she handed me some clothes.
“This is your uniform, you only get two sets. There’s a restroom down the hall and to the right, go change and come straight back here.” She said with her pointy nose up in the air.
“Yes ma’am.” I replied as I left her office and made my way down to the restroom. It was right next to the elevator and I don’t know why, but when they dinged open I felt myself drawn to look towards them. I watched as Hunter stepped out wearing black slacks and a light green button down that made his eyes pop. When his eyes met mine a brilliant smile broke out across his face.
“Good morning, Kayley.” I felt my heart flutter when he said my name.
“Good morning, Mr. Wilde.” I smiled up at him as he walked towards me
“Please, call me Hunter.” I watched as his eyes tracked down my body. I suddenly felt self conscious in my purple dress.
“You look beautiful.” I felt my throat run dry. He called me beautiful. This absolute God of a man just called me beautiful. I think I might melt where I stand.
“T-thank you.” I felt the blush creep up my cheeks.
“Anytime.” He gave me a wink as he headed to his office. I hurriedly headed to the restroom with a giant smile plastered across my face. When I got inside a stall I took a moment to look at my uniform. It was simple, black slacks with a dark gray short sleeved button up shirt with the company’s logo over the breast. I don’t know how, but Greta guessed my sizes perfectly. Extra large pants with a large shirt. Once I stepped out of the stall I took a moment to look at myself in the full length mirror. Wow these pants do wonders for my round bottom and the shirt is slightly cinched at the waist, highlighting my curves. I made my way back down to Greta’s office to find her sitting at her desk.
“Took long enough.” She huffed as she stood from her seat.
“First I’ll have you go down to the first floor where you’ll meet with Carol in HR to fill out your appropriate paperwork. Then you’ll come back here and we’ll go over your duties.” I nodded as I listened to her. Once I was dismissed I followed her directions down to HR. I felt nervous and excited all at once to finally have my first job and to be able to afford my own place. Hopefully in a few years Bea could come live with me. I smiled at the idea of sharing some little apartment with her.
