Chapter Two

1509 Words
Sebastian: After enduring what felt like a grueling day, I just couldn't take it anymore and decided to leave work earlier than planned. My focus was shot, and I needed some downtime desperately. I plopped down on the couch in my living room, feeling utterly drained, and all I wanted to do was zone out in front of the TV until I drifted off to sleep. But my plan got derailed when I noticed my mother walking in, looking visibly troubled. "Hey, Sebastian, welcome home! How was work today?" she asked, giving me a reassuring pat on the back, but her worry was written all over her face. "Are you okay, Mum?" I couldn't help but respond with a question, feeling uneasy despite my usual hesitation around women. It's true that I've had some rough experiences with them in the past, but my mom was different; I still loved her deeply. She sat down beside me, and before she could say what was on her mind, my father appeared with an unusual smug grin. He's usually the cheerful type, so seeing him like this caught me off guard. My father owned the successful Clark's communications company, and he'd made me the CEO, even though I was his second son. Just a month ago, he mentioned that he wanted to transfer the entire company to my name due to his age. I was ecstatic about it, but then he added a condition that I couldn't come to terms with. "Oh, you're back. I assume your mother has already talked to you about it?" he said, pushing his glasses up on the bridge of his nose. “About what?” I knew exactly what he was referring to—a wife. But the thought of getting into another relationship after the string of failed ones shot daggers at my heart. Every other time it ended in heartbreak, either because they cheated or claimed I wasn't good enough. Deep down, though, I knew I, Sebastian, was more than enough, and I deserved someone who appreciated that. Except for Elizabeth, though. She was the last lady I was in a relationship with and I had loved her wholeheartedly but what happened? Just few weeks to our wedding, she disappeared without a trace and I never got to see her again. It was so heartbreaking, that I fell really sick and got admitted to the hospital. It was that heartbreaking. I had been on the lookout for her,but got no positive feedback. "You need to get married before I sign the company to your name, and that must happen in less three months.” My fathers words jolted me back to reality as he snapped his fingers. “Or you leave me with no choice than to sign it in your brother’s name.” He retorted. “That’s not possible Dad. It’s not!” I said, frustration on my face already as I couldn’t even agree to all the trash he was spewing. “Then watch me do it.” He said and hissed,as my mother and I saw him walk away. “Dad?” I mumbled a reply hoping he’d turn around and listen to what I had to say, but all he did was slam door so hard and that made me flinch. He couldn’t. My step brother is an irresponsible fellow who just goes about drinking and sleeping with various women. He was the first son, whose mother had died when he was 2,and my father had remarried my mother. Even as we’re now old,we’re no friends. My mother gave me a long cold stare as she inched closer to me. “Son,you need to find a wife. Don’t let your past experiences hinder you from getting one. Or are you ready to lose your inheritance, the company,to your brother?” Her voice trembled as she spoke,of course she didn’t want that to happen. I stood up furiously and stomped out the house. I was angered,I came home early and needed to rest for a while, but they weren’t making things easy. I stared at my phone like I was expecting a call, and surprisingly,a call came in. It was Dice. Dice had been my really close friend ever since we graduated college and honestly,i loved him way more than my stepbrother. “Hey! Are you fine?” He responded after I picked up the call and hummed a low toned “hi”. He knew something was wrong. “I’m fine. Just my parents at it,again. I ho..” I wanted to continue but he cut my words short with what ever it is he wanted to say. “Well,I have a surprise for you! And you’ll love it,bet!” “Really? You can’t spill now?” I said,as I hated to be kept in suspense. “No. Let’s just meet. It’s a surprise, remember?” He said,as he knew one of the things loved most; Surprises. “Fine.” I said, ready to get going to wherever it was the surprise would hold. That would take my mind off my father’s request,at least. He texted me the address where we could meet: Lily's, a charming restaurant situated a bit far from my place, but the distance didn't faze me. I could get there in no time. Swiftly, I made my way to my Lamborghini, only to find the gatekeeper snooping around as if it were his own. "Step away from there!" I snapped, causing him to flinch before quickly retreating. It's not my usual demeanor, but in moments of anger, I tend to act unexpectedly. Once inside the car, as soon as I ignited the engine, my mother emerged from the house, shouting something incomprehensible. I tilted my head away from where she stood,as I had my focus set on the surprise awaiting me and sped away without a second thought. The breeze caressed my face and the journey was getting to be so smooth not until an unexpected sight derailed my calm self. It was a woman, more like a lady, who materialized out of nowhere, moving at the pace of a snail. I hit the brakes quickly, narrowly avoiding a collision. My heart raced as she stumbled, her books scattering. Swiftly collecting her things, she approached my car. But as I rolled down the window, I was taken aback. I shot her a cold stare, and she didn’t even move an inch. How she had a striking resemblance to my ex-girlfriend, Elizabeth, was uncanny, except for her blue eyes instead of Elizabeth's green ones. When I saw she wasn’t ready to say a word,as she continued to stare back,I broke the silence. "Elizabeth?" I said, hoping she’d at least confirm my doubts, but my hopes were shattered when she responded. "I'm not Elizabeth! I'm Steffany," she replied, seemingly waiting for an apology. I found her gaze oddly irritating, which made me give her a smug smirk. "Why the look? Shouldn't you be the one apologizing? You nearly got yourself run over," I retorted, watching her annoyance flare up. "Really? You're the one who should be sorry! You almost killed me!" she shot back, her anger palpable. I couldn't help but burst into laughter at her fiery response. Couldn’t blame her,she didn’t know who she was conversing with at that point. "Brat! You find this funny now?" she asked, her anger simmering before I interjected, tossing a hundred-dollar note her way. "Clean up and spare me the rant. You look terrible. Ugh." With that, I rolled up the window, shutting out her words. This day couldn't get worse. I sped off, escaping her tirade and soon arrived at Lily's. The transformation of the place was astonishing, like an elite heaven. It was a world I fit into seamlessly. Enduring over twenty minutes of wait wasn't my thing. Downing a third cocktail and with Dice refusing to answer my calls, I decided to head home. Unexpectedly, Steffany walked in. The same girl from earlier entered, looking bewildered, clearly a newcomer. Or perhaps she was stalking me? She shot me a disdainful look before occupying a vacant seat, her eyes filled with awe as she scanned the restaurant, a low "wow" escaping her lips. Her unfamiliarity with luxury was evident. My tension eased when Dice finally arrived. He chuckled as he pulled me into a tight hug which,as expected, provided some comfort. He gestured towards the girl, Steffany, inviting her over. “What? You know her?” I said as I saw her packing her bag and coming over. Still in shock, she approached hesitantly, a faint smile gracing her lips. "Hi Dice, is this my new boss?" she stammered, leaving me baffled. Did she just say boss? What lies have Dice fed this pauper? "No, let me clarify." Dice's excitement was palpable as he cleared his throat and spoke up. "Steffany, this is Sebastian, the CEO of Clark's Communications," Dice introduced, shooting me a smile before turning to Steffany. "Sebastian, meet Steffany, your new wife." His words left us both stunned, a simultaneous gasp escaping our lips as we echoed in disbelief: "Wife?"
