Chapter 8 – Glass and Fire

825 Words
Rose wandered the halls of Luciano’s home like a stranger in someone else’s dream. Everything was quiet—too quiet. The kind of silence that didn’t mean peace, but tension. The walls were thick with secrets. She could feel it in the way the staff didn’t meet her eyes. In the way doors opened and closed behind her, as if shadows moved of their own accord. She wasn’t used to this kind of life. Bulletproof windows. Reinforced locks. Whispered conversations in a language not meant for her. She missed the scent of peonies. Missed normal. But normal had died the night Luciano bled into her floor. She paused at a closed door on the second floor—one that wasn’t hers. Something tugged at her gut. She knocked. No answer. Curiosity pulled her hand to the knob. It wasn’t locked. Inside, the room was dark, minimal, cold. Black leather chair. Steel gun case. A single photograph on the desk. Luciano, younger. No tattoos. No scars. Standing beside a man who looked just like him—only harder. Older. His father. She didn’t hear the footsteps behind her until it was too late. “What are you doing?” Luciano’s voice wasn’t raised, but it sliced like a knife. Rose turned, caught. “I—I was just…” “You were just snooping.” His jaw clenched. “This is my office. Not a tourist stop.” “I wasn’t—” She swallowed. “I’m not a spy, Luciano.” “Then don’t act like one.” They stared at each other in the dim light. “I thought you wanted me to trust you,” she said softly. “I do,” he replied, stepping closer. “But trust isn’t blind. Especially in my world.” She didn’t flinch, even as he came within inches. “And what about me? Am I just some debt you’re repaying? Or another pawn in your game?” His expression shifted—just slightly. But enough. “I told you,” he said, voice low, “you saved me. That’s not a debt. That’s a turning point.” “For you, maybe,” she said. “For me? It’s a prison.” Something flickered in his eyes then—pain, maybe. Regret. But it vanished just as quickly. Luciano stepped back, letting air return to the room. “Come with me.” Rose hesitated. “Where?” “To see the truth.” --- Downtown – Moretti Headquarters They pulled into a private garage below a sleek skyscraper in Lower Manhattan. Luciano led her through security like a shadow at his side. No one spoke. No one questioned. In the elevator, he said nothing until the doors opened to a private floor—walls of glass overlooking the city, the river cutting across like a silver blade. “This is where I conduct business,” he said. “Above ground. Legal. Visible.” Rose stepped forward, taking it all in. “It’s beautiful.” “Deceptively so.” He led her into a conference room. Three men were already waiting. One of them stood. “Rose, this is Emilio—my cousin. One of the few people I still trust.” Emilio gave a curt nod. “Heard a lot about you. Most of it under oath.” Rose raised an eyebrow. “Is that supposed to comfort me?” Luciano actually smirked. They sat, and a digital map lit up on the table. “Three safe houses have been hit in the last week,” Emilio said. “Each time, only the attackers walked away. Someone’s feeding intel to the Grimaldis.” Luciano added, “And they want more than turf. They want blood.” Rose leaned forward, absorbing every word. “Why bring me here?” she asked finally. Luciano didn’t hesitate. “Because you're already in it. You deserve the truth. And because I need someone I trust completely to watch my blind side.” Rose’s breath caught. “You trust me?” “With my life.” She didn’t know whether to be honored or terrified. Maybe both. --- Later That Night – Rooftop Rose stood alone on the rooftop of the Moretti tower, city lights below like scattered diamonds. The wind tugged at her coat, her hair. Luciano joined her silently. She didn’t turn. “I miss the flowers,” she said. “I know.” She looked at him then, eyes serious. “Do you ever miss being... normal?” Luciano considered it. “I don’t remember what that felt like.” They stood in silence, the city breathing below. Then, gently, she asked, “What happens if we can’t stop them?” Luciano looked at her, the hardened edge gone for once. “Then I burn everything down. For you.” And as terrifying as that promise was… It made her heart ache with something dangerously close to love. ---
