Awareness returned to Lila in a disorienting rush of new sensations unlike anything she'd ever experienced. Her eyes snapped open, but her vision was markedly different - sharper, with brilliant depth and clarity. Colors appeared more vibrant, almost glowing, while the moonlight shimmered with an ethereal incandescence.
Even more unsettling were the new sounds encircling her with eerie resonance. She could discern every crunch of leaves underfoot from the gathered throngs, every rustle of forest creatures stirring in the underbrush - as if the entire woodland soundscape had been amplified tenfold.
The smells were what proved most overwhelming in their potent intensity. Each individual scent component seemed to crash over her in visceral waves. The woody fragrances of the Oakgrove mingled with the earthy aromas of crushed ferns, pungent pine needles, rich soil and decomposing foliage. Layered beneath wafted the distinct body odors of the multitudes ringing the clearing - some musky, some floral, all of them utterly bewitching to her newly awakened senses.
As Lila slowly became reacclimated to her surroundings, the realization of what had occurred washed over her with dizzying force. The violent metamorphosis she'd endured, the excruciating agony of her bones fracturing and remolding into a new form...she recognized it now from the ancient lore.
She was no longer merely human. She was Lycan - a shapeshifter imbued with preternatural abilities and the primal power of the wolves.
With that epiphany came another even more overwhelming revelation crashing through her consciousness like a mystical tidal wave. She could feel it thrumming through her very essence, setting her blood afire with instinctual need - the driving pulse of her mate bond.
The sacred texts spoke of this phenomenon, but no mere scholarly teachings could encapsulate the exquisite torture of the compulsion now gripping her. It transcended her physical form, bypassing her rational mind to latch onto her soul with laserlike focus. An inflexible arcane force propelled her to unite with her ineshiyo - her spirit's other half.
Everywhere she turned, the enticing scents of unmated males wafted around her in a siren's lure. Her wolf bucked and strained against its tenuous chains, fighting to overpower her lingering human tethers with its single-minded yearning.
To her mortification, a desperate, keening whine escaped her throat - the universal Lycan call to one's mate. At once, a sea of eyes locked onto her from the surrounding gatherers.
The Moon Maidens materialized at her side, steadying her with their gnarled hands and murmuring soothing Words of ritual prayer. Lila panted harshly, fighting to regain control over the unfurling tide of euphoric ecstasy and frenzied need. She ran her hands over her face, fingertips mapping the newly sharpened planes of her features, feeling the catlike slits of her irises dilating in response to her churning emotional state.
"Peace, child," the High Priestess Seraphina hushed in her wizened rasp. "Do not resist the boon of your Awakening. The Mother Moon has bestowed her most sacred gift by revealing your una vida. You must let the bond's essence guide you to your intended."
Lila shook her head, damp tendrils of chestnut hair slashing at her flushed cheeks. "I don't understand," she rasped out, every one of her senses now straining towards an undiscovered locus pulling at the most primitive root of her desires. "How can I--?"
The chorus of hungry howls resounding all around them served as answer enough.
All at once, the rest of the gathered unmated wolves convulsed with mirroring transformations as if set off by her initial Awakening. Bodies elongated and reshaped amidst tearing garments and shattering bones as lupine muzzles stretched forth on agonized cries. Fur sprouted wildly, claws lengthened and fangs protruded from sharply descending snouts. Within moments, Lila found herself in the midst of two dozen fully transfigured beasts - a roiling kaleidoscope of identically golden-amber and searing sapphire shades signifying the pure-blooded Were ranks filling the Moonswood Grove.
The Priestesses instantly ushered those in human form to the grove's periphery for safety while maintaining a protective circle around Lila and the newly forged wolves. Several growls and hackles raised, hinting at the violence that could erupt if the brutal mating rites commenced in earnest without Lila identifying and claiming her rightful mate first.
"Look within yourself," Seraphina instructed with solemn urgency. "Let the cord of your spirit wind outward and follow where it leads you. That is the way to your una vida. All else must be blocked out until you have solidified the permanent bond."
Squeezing her eyes shut, Lila centred herself amidst the roiling chaos of phorid predators prowling on constantly shifting haunches. She could feel the phantom ley line of her essence weighting and tugging with supernatural gravity - a sublimely enticing force cajoling all her carnal instincts to take over. Her breath soon became ragged pants, perspiration beading her skin as shockwaves of blissful yearning rushed molten and insistent through her core.
In her mind's eye, she envisioned an ethereal silver cord unfurling from the very depths of her soul, extending outwards in a shimmering ribbon towards an undiscovered nexus point. The farther it stretched, the more her essence felt magnetized towards her mate's in a spiraling vortex of spiritual synergy. She could almost discern his aura beckoning to her - strength and tenderness woven in sultry virile flames.
The cord grew so taut, so unyieldingly powerful in its thrall that Lila felt herself being inexorably drawn forward. Her paws seemed to move of their own accord, muscles tensing and bunching beneath her pelt as she broke into a purposeful lope through the throngs of circling wolves.
She was only vaguely aware of the snarls and posturing bodies being displaced in her wake. The rest of the pack had ceased to exist save for the reverberating lifeline tugging at the core of her reinvigorated being. Her predator's stare locked onto that invisible lodestar, following the scent trail of smoldering pine and spiced musk until--
There!
Piercing amber eyes seared into hers across the clearing as her destined mate's powerful form rose up in challenge, thick ruff bristling and muzzle curling back from elongated fangs in a show of dominance. An arresting force slammed into Lila's abdomen, stealing the breath from her lungs as their bond solidified with unbreakable permanence.
This was him - her eternal other half, her ineshiyo. There could be no doubts as their essences merged together in a cosmic blaze of profound recognition and rapturous longing. Her growl rumbled low and needful as she stalked forward with purposeful s
trades, ready to claim her--
"Sebastian?!"
