Chapter 8

708 Words
As soon as she left the hospital, the agent called to say the house had been sold and ask when could she come sign the papers? "I'm on my way." Evelyn quickly completed her discharge procedures. After signing the contract, she booked a flight home for that night and returned to the apartment one last time. She didn't expect to see Aaron sitting there as soon as she opened the door. She turned to leave, but he hugged her from behind. "Evelyn, I was just so worried back there, are you hurt anywhere?" Evelyn struggled out of his embrace. "It's fine, I don't blame you." She had just got back, and now she was leaving again? Aaron finally sensed something. Today, Evelyn was too agreeable. Too quiet. In the past, even with a minor injury, she would desperately seek comfort and hugs from him. He felt a vague unease. This feeling of unease made him reach out to hug her again. "Honey, are you still angry?" But he missed again, as Evelyn sidestepped and moved to the door. "I have something to do. I'm going out." As she opened the door, Fiona was standing there, looking a bit displeased. Aaron panicked and explained softly. "I came to arrange for Evelyn to handle some company matters. Fiona, why are you here?" Fiona smiled gently. "Aaron, I came to apologize to Ms. Williams. There's a gift for her in the car. Could you go downstairs and get it?" As soon as Aaron left, her smile disappeared. "He's not here now, so you can drop the act. He loves me. He always has. From the very beginning. If I were you, I would have been long gone. Too ashamed to stay." She actually dropped the act. Evelyn's expression remained calm. "I know, I've never wanted to compete with you, but why are you so malicious, wanting to put me to death?" Fiona's eyes dodged. "What are you talking about? I don't understand." Evelyn's lips twisted into a cold smile. "Don't play dumb. You had your housekeeper lock me in that storage room. If I hadn't helped with the renovation, no one would have known there was a way out through the loft. You wanted me dead." Fiona didn't defend herself but became furious and slapped Evelyn. "b***h like you who steal other women's men deserve to die." The stinging pain on her face made Evelyn completely angry, and she slapped back with all her might. At that moment, the door opened. Fiona, who was about to strike back, suddenly collapsed weakly against the cabinet, tears welling in her eyes. Aaron rushed over, gathering her protectively into his arms. "Aaron, Evelyn said she's your girlfriend and accused me of trying to take you away. I said I didn't, and then she slapped me." Seeing the swelling on Fiona's face, Aaron could no longer control his emotions. "Evelyn, you're unreasonable. Fiona came to apologize to you even though she's injured, and you still won't let it go?" Evelyn looked him in the eye, enunciating each word deliberately. "Aaron, are you sure the truth is exactly as you see it?" Aaron was taken aback and was about to say something when Fiona weakly spoke, her voice trembling with sobs. "Evelyn, I'm Aaron's sister-in-law. I never intended to compete with you for anything." Aaron's face immediately filled with anger. "She's right. Why are you being so unreasonable? If Fiona hadn't come to find you at the villa, how would she have gotten hurt?" Evelyn opened her mouth, about to speak. Fiona's injury was on her arm, and when she fell, it "just so happened" to hit the wound. She had already fainted in his arms by then. Aaron, his eyes red with worry, carried her out. "I'll take Fiona to the hospital first. Wait for me at home, and I'll come find you after." He didn't notice that Evelyn's wound had reopened, blood staining her pant leg. Evelyn quickly bandaged her wound and headed to the airport. There was nothing left for her here. Before boarding, she got rid of everything related to Aaron, even tossing her phone into the trash. 'Goodbye, Aaron. For the rest of our lives, may our paths never cross again.'
