Pathetic Loser

VIOLET With each step walking down the altar, it felt like I was selling my freedom and happiness away. My heart felt like a hollow shell drained of life and happiness. I was a pawn in this game which would forever alter the course of my life. For days, I had begged Vaughn to reject the alliance but he had refused to listen to me. “Do you, Vaughn Ford take Violet Carlton as your lawfully wedded wife?” The priest smiled and his lips thinned into a smile. “It’s not too late, you know?” I whispered. “You can still say no. We do not have to do this. We can both go our separate ways. If this is because I left you years ago, then....” “I do.” He spoke, loud and clear and everyone cheered in excitement. My eyes became teary yet I tried to force the tears back in. “Do you, Violet Carlton take Vaughn Ford as your lawfully wedded husband till death do you part?” The priest turned to me, his glasses hanging loosely from his nose. I diverted my gaze to my mom and dad and I could see the excitement permeating from them. “Y... yes, I do.” I responded and claps erupted from the crowd. It felt like I had been punched in the gut and my legs felt weak. As soon as I could, I stepped away from there and headed to the bathroom immediately. I wanted to throw up, to tear myself into pieces but I had to stay calm. I tried to be as composed as I could before stepping out. “Thank you for making me proud, child.” Father smiled and embraced me immediately I stepped out, just like he had been waiting for me and I had to fake a smile as well. I had barely gotten over my failed marriage. I hadn’t even healed and now? This? Everyone waved at us as we both got into the car and he drove off. I could not bare to look at him and instead, diverted my gaze to the window. He didn’t utter a word to me and instead, diverted his gaze to his iPad, ignoring me. He hurriedly picked up his phone and placed it to his ear. “Is the plane ready?” He probed. My brows arched as I turned to look at him in shock. What was he talking about? “My wife and I will be taking a stop at the hotel to have a quick change of cloth and we will be there.” He spoke and ended the call. “What... what plane? Where are we going, Matheo?” “In case you haven’t figured out, Matheo is dead. I am Vaughn now. Also, we are traveling for our honeymoon.” He responded. “Why do I feel like this is not because of the alliance? You are doing this to get back to me for ending things with you eight years ago, right? Why didn’t you say no to this alliance?” He simply smirked and shook his head. “You are still delusional as always. Why would I say no? Family means a lot to me and I am not the type of person who would bring shame to their family for their selfish satisfaction.” He mocked and I felt stabbed by his words. I couldn’t utter a word anymore as I looked away from him. My heart still ached from the hurt Ralph had caused me. Where could he be now? What could he possibly be doing right now? Suddenly, the driver brought the car to an abrupt halt that neither of us expected. I was about to ask what was going on when I realized a car had crossed us. Just then, the door of the other vehicle flung open and Ralph dashed out of it, his eyes blazing with anger as he approached us. I was a tad bit confused about what was going on when he suddenly reached for us and pulled the door open. Before I could say Jack, he pulled me out of the car, almost making me fall to the ground. “Really? Really, you slut? How could you? Is this who you are? You have been sleeping with him? You have been sleeping with that bastard?!” He yelled at me. “What are you saying? How can you even accuse me of such? All I did was love you and take care of you and what did I get in return?” “And that was why you had to turn yourself to a w***e for him?” He pointed. A gasp escaped my lips at the words he had uttered. “I will not take you saying those negative words to my wife. Get your silly self while you still can.” Vaughn spoke, his gaze still on his iPad as he sat calmly. He suddenly opened the door and stepped out of the car and grabbed me closer to myself. Ralph stared at us, quite star stricken. “How could you do this to me, Vaughn? How could you do this, you bastard! You encouraged me to end things with her so you could marry her? How could you betray me like this?!” I stood there, frozen. What was he talking about? What was this all about? Vaughn kissed his teeth and shook his head with a smug, self-satisfied smile. “You were just a foolish little boy playing at marriage. You were just a temporary obstacle and now that you are out of the way, I think it’s best to claim what is mine.” He chuckled. “Why the pretense? Let’s just say I helped facilitate the process. You were so eager to get rid of her, it was almost......pathetic.” I felt a chill run down my spine. Could he possibly have orchestrated .... the divorce? “You are going to pay for this, I promise you that.!” Ralph yelled before getting into the car and I simply froze, still trying to process what I had just heard. “Get into the car. We are getting late.” Vaughn walked over to the other side of the car. “What..... just happened?”
