VIOLET
I couldn’t sleep all through the night as the words continued resounded in my head. I sat up, a little confused about what I heard earlier that day. Facilitated the divorce? What could have happened between them?
Vaughn refused to utter a word to me even after I asked him what was happening. He claimed he had something important to attend to and there I was, on my ‘wedding night’ left alone at the hotel room. I was awoken the next morning to ‘prepare’ for the trip since we couldn’t go the previous night.
“Good morning, wifey.” He grinned widely. “I believe you had a pleasant night?” He spoke with excitement. It had been a cold and shocking night. If anyone had told me my life was going to take a turn for the negative weeks back, I would have argued.
“We need to go.” He spoke, his voice low and urgent. “Our plane is waiting.”
I tried to speak but my voice caught in my throat. I couldn’t form words, couldn’t even form a whisper. I was mute and silenced by shock.
He took my hands in his and led me out the door, down the steps and into the waiting car. I sat numbly in the plane seat, my mind reeling with questions and fear. Needless to say, it was a private jet.
“We need to talk.” I swallowed the lump of saliva in my throat after sitting numbly for a few hours. He simply smirked and raised his brows. “What do you want from me? I know you do not love me...”
“Obviously.” He responded immediately.
“And this ... is possibly not just because of the alliance. Are you trying to get revenge on me for breaking your heart and leaving you?” I probed.
He simply chuckled and shook his head without uttering any more word to me neither did he give me any response. After what seemed like forever, we arrived at ‘our destination’ and this time, I was taken to another hotel.
“I will send someone to come take you out to get some outfits and I will be coming by 8pm. There is someone important you need to meet.”
Before I could get the chance to say a word, he got into the car and drove away, leaving me at the hotel again. What the heck was going on? Was this how we were going to live?
I had barely sat on the bed when my phone rang, causing me to shiver.
“Hello, who is this?” I probed but whoever it was, was quiet. “Who is this? Who is on the line?”
All I could hear was ragged breath before whoever it was ended the call. I shrugged and began to get my things in order when my phone rang for the second time. I picked it up again but to my surprise, it was the same thing. Who the heck was this person and what could they possibly want?
A knock that interrupted my thoughts, almost gave me a heart attack as a gasp escaped my lips. I had initially thought it was him hence I stood up and proceeded towards the door. I had expected to see Vaughn but I was instead greeted with a warm smile from a beautiful, slender woman standing outside the door.
“Good afternoon, ma'am. My name is Rose and I am from your husband, Mr. Ford. “ She spoke with a gentle courtesy. Her elegance and poise caught my attention. I could not help but admire her and barely heard any of what she saw saying. “He asked me to come take you out for shopping.”
Quickly, I picked up a few things and went with her.
“What is your relationship with Vaughn?” I probed and her lips thinned into a smile.
“You have no reason to be worried. There is nothing going on between us.”
I was a little embarrassed when she uttered those words. Oh, I didn’t care if anything was going between them or not.
“I am sorry if I made you feel that way. I was just curious. I wanted to know if. … Never mind.” I shook my head immediately and focused on the journey. We picked up a few things and returned to the hotel and of course, he did hire some glam team to get me prepared.
Afterwards, I was led out of the hotel and this time, a man whom I believed to be his assistant helped with my luggage. Was I moving to another hotel this time or finally to his house?
Vaughn’s car was already waiting downstairs and he did have a very wide smile as he led me into his car and in no time, we arrived at our destination with neither of us uttering a word to the other.
Right in the room, were a whole lot of people who seemed to be partying. A shiver ran through my spine the minute I saw them. I had no idea who they were but I really didn’t feel comfortable seeing them there.
Just then, a man walked up to us, his mouth wide opened as he stared at me and then at Vaughn.
“Is it… her?” The guy subtly asked as though I could not hear him and Vaughn chuckled before nodding.
“You really…..sealed the deal?” The man started, staring at me and then at Vaughn. “Man, you are crazy. I didn’t think you'd actually go through with it!”
“Let’s just say... I always collect on my debts. I don’t leave unpaid accounts opened for too long and that simply means you are owing me a couple thousand bucks now.”
I stood there, watching like a fool as I had no idea of what they were saying or what they were talking about but the constant gaze of his friend on me who would not stop smiling got me a tad bit worried.
“Hey…” A lady who seemed to be in her mid thirties tapped me on the shoulder. “Do you mind a stroll? I bet you will be bored in here.”
I nodded and obliged before walking out of the room with her. Staying in there really did not seem like what I could handle. I couldn’t deal with it.
We had taken a few walks away from the party and instead, proceeded to the garden of the house.
“I forgot something. Give me a few minutes.” She pleaded and I nodded, watching her go inside. Suddenly, my phone rang and relief washed through me when I saw it was my mother. I had missed her so much.
“Baby….” She started, her voice quivering.
“Mom, are you okay?” I raised my brows.
“Vee, there is.. there is something you need to know.” She stammered. What the heck could be going on? I suddenly heard a faint clattering sound followed by a brief moment of static then the line went dead.
“Mom?” I called out, but there was only silence. My heart began to race as I wondered what had happened. How could I even reach her?
A chill suddenly ran down my spine as a hand suddenly grasped my shoulder, making me jump in fright. I spun around, my heart racing only to be met the eyes of the woman from earlier. There was suddenly a menacing aura surrounding her. What is going on?
