"It means," he started slowly. "If you're ever going to claim responsibility, which clearly isn't, then, this is the point where you start acting like someone worthy of it!"
"And if I don't do any of that?" Ronan didn't hesitate, not even for a few seconds, no sign of him checking his words before saying them.
"Then, I will do that for you."
There was complete silence, the kind that doesn't need words to explain. The small crowd that had gathered, were completely in shock. For a second, Elara's heart nearly stopped breathing. Selene just stood there, with her eyes wide in shock
"Dad..."
But Ronan already moved back, gaining control of himself quickly just the way he lost it. He exhaled slowly the moment he realized how messed up he was.
Then, to redeem himself, he spoke again in a calm and collected manner. It was so perfect that no one would believe something had happened.
"My apologies," he started, his tone now returning to neutral. "As the Alpha of this pack, I see it as my duty to take the wellbeing of every member if my pack seriously. And in delicate maters like this, I add more effort.
His explanation came out seamless, almost a cover to the truth, but somehow, it still lingered heavily on the surface.
Jax frowned, as it was obvious that didn't convince him for the Alpha's sudden behavior. But he made no effort to push it further. Selene on the other hand kept quiet, but watching closely, as her gaze moved from Elara to her father. She knew that something wasn't adding up. It was so bad that Elara could see the questions in her eyes. But she bottled them up, and that scared her more than anything.
Ronan turned to leave when he realized there was nothing he could do to retrieve the words he had said. To him, he shouldn't be apological about what he said, especially since he's the Alpha. He would have done anything he wanted, but for the sake of Elara, he didn't want to force anything.
Before he finally left, his gaze found Elara just for the last time. It wasn't just any kind of look, but the lingering intense and possessive gaze that left them breathless. It was more of a silent claim, which everyone around could see. And for no reason, Elara's wolf responded instantly.
Everyone might not have gotten an understanding of what happened, but Elara did very well. This is because, no matter how much both of them tried to hide the truth, their connection, their wolves had a way of saying that loud.
**************
Kira Storm never believed in coincidences, and this...this was too convenient to be considered one. She stood by the balcony, a glass of wine in her hand, as her sharp eyes scanned as much as it could, the training grounds below. It was the exact place where the unknown scene had unfolded.
Within her, she could feel that something was wrong. "How possible is it that Elara gets pregnant... suddenly?" She muttered to no one under her breath. "And this happens to be by Jax? After everything that happened between them?" She took a slow sip of her wine.
No.
That wasn't adding up to her. She could not stand how Jax was all possessive around Elara, like she was the best thing that ever happened to him. And worsen it, Alpha Ronan. From the growl, to the intense look, down to his reaction when Jax got close to her. "That was certainly not normal at all." She whispered to no one.
She had lived in the pack long enough to have seen possessive wolves before. She had also seen jealous mates before. But that which they had? It was something else completely. Dangerous and claiming at the same time.
And all of that wasn't directed to Jax, it was rather to Elara. "Thinking too hard again?" A voice interrupted her, making her glance sideways. It was Jax who had decided to join her on the balcony. On getting her attention, he leaned casually on the doorway, his arms folded, as he tried to act normal.
But Kira was smart enough to notice the tension he was battling with, especially on his shoulders.
"You seem awfully quiet today," he added, moving a step closer.
"I'm just thinking," she replied simply.
She turned to him, carefully studying him like a book. "I'm thinking about you," she said.
Jax blinked twice, completely taken aback by her response.
"Me?"
"Yes." This made her gaze on him to become sharpened. "Tell me something that I need to know, Jax. When exactly did you sleep with Elara last? The very one that got her pregnant."
This made him stiff, as he wasn't expecting the question. "That's not your concern." He replied.
Kira frowned, a smirk by the corner of her lip. "It is my business."
"Is it now?" He asked softly, taking a few steps forward.
"Of course, you should know that it is."
"How do you explain that the pregnancy is yours, when you were with me most of the nights," she asked quietly. "Also, including that particular week she supposedly conceived of your pup."
Jax's expression suddenly went pale. But it didn't last long. Kira saw the look on his face, how terrified that he was, and that made her smirk. She was gradually sowing seeds of discord, and with time, it would germinate.
"You see what I'm talking about. That's one thing I have been trying to understand," she continues. "You barely touched her. I can swear you couldn't stand being around her, at the same place. And all of a sudden, she became pregnant with your pup?"
Jax ran a frustrated hand through his hair, clearly irritated now. "Things changed, and things happened. Though it wasn't how we planned it." He muttered in defense. "We weren't completely done to start with."
Kira shook her head, not believing he could say such to her. "And I'm supposed to stand here, and swallow every word from your mouth?"
Jax didn't answer her. He couldn't say anything, and that was because he didn't know what to believe in again.
Even though Jax was still finding it difficult to believe, Kira could see everything clearly, and wasn't going to watch them like that.
"She broke up with you for obvious reasons," Kira continued. "She went as far as humiliating you, is publicly...and declared not wanting anything to do with you."
Jax scoffed at this point, but said nothing.
"Yeah, I understand all that, but she's carrying my child now."
Kira laughed out loud. A humorless kind of laughter. "Or, she might be pretending to."
Jax's hand snapped to her direction, not pleased with her choice of words, but something in him was too inquisitive.
"What meaning am I supposed to get from that?"
