Chapter 20 Midnight Encounter

1080 Words
The night seemed to call unto her. Elara lay on her bed, sleep very far from her as she stared at the ceiling. Her hands found their way to rest in her stomach gently, as she tried rocking herself to sleep. But with all her effort, her mind kept on wandering. Even her wolf wouldn't at rest, as it kept pacing restlessly around the room, drawn to him. She squeezed her eyes shut in an attempt to call on sleep, but it was nowhere close. "No..." She which to herself. "Not again..." But the more she tried to distract herself, the stronger and deeper the pull only became. It was too demanding, like something deep inside her was calling out... It go to the point that her breath became uneven, her heart racing uncontrollably. And before she could stop herself, she was already standing. "I just need to get fresh air," she muttered to herself, but it wasn't convincing enough in her ears, as she quickly grabbed a light jacket. She knew that was an excuse, and a lie. And that's because deep down inside her, she knew exactly where she was going to. The pack ground felt very empty and quiet at that strange hour. The full moon was already up, watching and witnessing whatever was going to happen, and still judging. Elara stepped out of her house slowly, her bare feet brushing gently against the grass. Her wolf was alive, awake and aware of everything, stirring gently the moment she left her house. "I know for sure you would come." Elara froze, startled. That voice...it was low, but very familiar, and dangerous. She knew immediately that it belonged to Ronan, her partner in crime. His eyes locked instantly with hers, the moment they saw each other. His tall figure remained imposing under the moonlight, his breathing slowed. "Elara..." He called out, softly and breathlessly. Her name kind of sounded very different on his lips, but still very possessive. "I didn't come here for you," she replied, even her voice wasn't kind enough to not betray her. Ronan's lips curved slightly as if Elara was sucking on them. "Then, why exactly are you here?" He asked. But she had no answer for him, and that was because they both know the truth. It was actually her wolf that brought her out to meet him. "Your wolf is restless," he started calmly. "The same with yours," she shot back, almost not allowing him to finish. He didn't make any effort to deny it, because that was the truth. To be honest, his wolf had been very restless since that very night, since she happened. Ever since they formed the bond that shouldn't exist, all he could think of was her. "You shouldn't come out this late," she suddenly said, like she was speaking to her child. "Neither should you," he replied. With that, he took more steps closer, dangerously close now that anything could happen. At this point, Elara's breath hitched, as she remained breathless. "Ronan..." She called his name, not even sure why she did. "Don't," He cut her off before she could resist him. "It's already to much that you're pretending not to feel this." He said, his eyes roaming all over her. "I don't have any idea of what you are talking about." That was a lie, and she knew it. A very weak one. She let out a humorless laugh, a comfort to himself. "You're so terrible at lying." He said. Ronan was the only one who could comfortably see through her, even in her pretence. His gaze drop slowly, until it landed on her stomach. "You're now carrying a child." He started calmly. This made her heart to skip a beat, as she wasn't expecting that, stepping back instinctively. "It belongs to Jax." She replied without being asked. The words came out too practiced, too fake, making her sound dumb. "And, you are expecting me to believe a word of what you just said?" He asked. "Yes " "No." The silence came heavy, unforgiving and intense. He took more steps closer to her, completely closing the remaining distance she created. "You were the one that came to me that night," he started, his voice very low. "I can't remember you going to him." This made her to start shaking, but she still stood before him. "That doesn't count for anything." "It means a whole lot." In a blink of an eye, his hand moved, as he reached out to touch her. He could barely hold himself back, but he did anyways, so that it won't appear like he was rushing things. "Elara..." He called with a soft voice. "Look into my eyes, and boldly tell me you don't feel anything." Of course, she wasted no time. She did, trying to prove a point, but it was suffocating, overwhelming, and terrifying at the same time. Her wolf could not pretend, but responding to him even though she tried to restraint it. "I can't," she whispered. "And that's because it's not true as you claimed." He replied. Her eyes moved to his, the pain, the desire, everything raw in their eyes. "That's only because it shouldn't be true in anyway!" She snapped before she could stop herself. "You're forgetting you're my best friend's father!" That words remaining hanging in the air, as they both know the truth. It was too sharp and too real to be ignored. But Ronan still didn't move back. "I know exactly what I am."he replied quietly. "I know what I am without your reminder," he said. "Then, you should act like it," she shot back, her voice already breaking. "Act like the Alpha of this pack that you are. Act the part where you are a father to someone, to my best friend. Act like none of this ever happened in the first place." "I can't do any of that, especially when you are involved." The response calm immediately, very firm and final. This made Elara to freeze, her heart pounding wildly. "What is too hard there to not do?" She whispered. Ronan quickly closed the distance between them, their lips just an inch apart. "That's because my wolf won't ever let me do such thing," he replied. "And neither will yours permit you, even if you keep pretending not to notice." They both stayed still, their eyes glued on each other's lips, as the air became suddenly too intense for them.
