Chapter 45 The Diagnosis

1004 Words
"Move aside all of you!" The healer ordered on seeing the crowd. He was not pleased that such a crowd had gathered just to watch someone that was sick. As for Selene, she lay calmly in a narrow bed, still not moving, but her chest was just rising and falling slowly. Mira sat down beside her, her hands shaking without control. "Please, tell me... what's wrong with my daughter..." She whispered weakly. The healer waited for some time, focused on whatever he was doing, as he checked her pulse, eyes and breathing. The room had gone silent now, all ears waiting for the news. Even those outside couldn't go without getting the result. But Mira's patience level was already running thin. "Say something to me!" She demanded, her voice breaking. Then, after a couple of minutes, the healer finally straightened up, but his face wasn't assuring. It was too serious that Mira almost fainted. "What is the result?" She asked again. The healer exhaled slowly, then finally spoke. "I need to take a few minutes to run more tests, to be able to confirm the stages," he replied carefully. "Stages?" Mira repeated, now confused. "What stages are you talking about?" The healer stared at her directly, trying to figure out how to pass the news to her calmly. At this point, reality hit Mira, as she had managed to figure it out herself. No..."she whispered, not believing the result. But he still found a way to say it anyway. "It's cancer." The word cancer, felt like a death sentence, and it was. She tried to recall knowing people that was diagnosed of cancer, that survived it, but none came to her mind. All of them, both old and young all died. Now, it happens to be her daughter, Selene's turn. "No...no, that's never possible..." "She's fine...she was doing just fine a few minutes ago..." "She's been showing the symptoms for a while now," he told her gently. Mira shook her head, not believing the healer. "No... we're very close, so she would have told me if she noticed something strange in her body..." Then, she remembered how she isolated herself from everyone, the silence that followed, her door that was constantly locked. Mira crumbled to the floor, as she couldn't stop blaming herself. "What kind...is she suffering from?" She asked. The healer waited for a few seconds before speaking, and Mira knew then that it wasn't pleasant to the ears. "Aggressive." The word kept sounding in her ears like a joke. How did she arrive her? She kept wondering in her mind. "It's really progressing very fast," the healer tried explaining so that they would act fast, if there seemed to be hope again. "We need to act fast, to find out if there's any chance of survival." "How bad is it right now?" She asked, with hope in her eyes, her voice barely audible. The healer knew this wasn't the time to sugarcoat anything, as she needs to prepare herself both emotionally, psychologically, and mentally if anything goes wrong. "If we delay treatment...which is not a guarantee that she will survive it..." He paused, staring at her. "....we may end up losing her." "No!" Mira could not bear it any longer, as she screamed at the top of her voice, rushing to Selene's side again. "No, no, no... you're not going anywhere, do you hear your mother?" She cupped Selene's face, speaking positivity into her life. "You're very strong... you're my daughter...you will fight this and win..." Tears streamed down her face, as she was already tired of crying. "You must fight this, Selene...." Then, Selene suddenly moved a little, trying to open her eyes. She was finally conscious. "Mo...mom.." Mira immediately cleaned her tears, as she held her daughter to herself. "I'm right here baby," she whispered to her. "Mummy is here for you." Selene finally opened her eyes, as she tried to figure out where she was, because the environment looked very unfamiliar to her. "What... happened..?" She managed to ask weakly. Mira tried to hold herself. "You fainted, that's all that happened," she tried to explain. She couldn't bring herself to break the news to her the moment she woke up. She knew her daughter will not take it well, so she would wait till she's a little bit strong to hold herself. But Selene's body was already weak, and tired, then her eyes drifted again, and she slipped right back into unconsciousness. Mira pressed hand of Selene's forehead, feeling her temperature. "She didn't even bother to tell me..." She whispered to no one, now broken. The healer sighed, not knowing how to comfort her again. "Sometimes, they don't know, and when they find out, they hardly tell anyone about it .." he said. While Mira was trying to hold herself inside, those that had gathered outside waiting for the news suddenly became shocked. "... it's cancer?" "...are you serious about this?" "...she isn't pregnant like her best friend?" That was one of the maids that told them about Selene's health condition, and now, they were ashamed for jumping into conclusion, and condemning her. The same voices that had been in a hurry to condemn her, have now changed in seconds. There were no gossip backbiting her. "I had no idea....it was that serious..." "None of us did...we all thought..." "So she has been suffering all this whole time... while her father and best friend roamed in dark corners..." "Those that were supposed to be her pillar in this trying time, failed her woefully..." Right inside, Mira was still crying, as she never imagined such a day would come in her life. But she resolved to do everything possible to get Selene to her feet again, with or without Ronan, her father. "What do we need to do to give her a chance at living again?" She asked. The healer waited for a few seconds, and when she thought he won't say anything again, he responded. "We begin treatment immediately."
